* Prefer HTTPS to FTP and HTTP in documentationPaul Eggert2017-09-131-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Most of this change is to boilerplate commentary such as license URLs. This change was prompted by ftp://ftp.gnu.org's going-away party, planned for November. Change these FTP URLs to https://ftp.gnu.org instead. Make similar changes for URLs to other organizations moving away from FTP. Also, change HTTP to HTTPS for URLs to gnu.org and fsf.org when this works, as this will further help defend against man-in-the-middle attacks (for this part I omitted the MS-DOS and MS-Windows sources and the test tarballs to keep the workload down). HTTPS is not fully working to lists.gnu.org so I left those URLs alone for now.

* When VC detects a conflict, specify which fileKarl Fogel2015-11-091-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | * lisp/vc/vc.el (vc-message-unresolved-conflicts): New function. * lisp/vc/vc-svn.el (vc-svn-find-file-hook): * lisp/vc/vc-hg.el (vc-hg-find-file-hook): * lisp/vc/vc-bzr.el (vc-bzr-find-file-hook): * lisp/vc/vc-git.el (vc-git-find-file-hook): Use above new function to display a standard message that specifies the conflicted file. Before this change, the message VC used for indicating a conflicted file was just "There are unresolved conflicts in this file" without naming the file (and this language was duplicated in several places). After this change, it's "There are unresolved conflicts in file FOO" (and this language is now centralized in one function in vc.el). Justification: It's important for the message to name the conflicted file because the moment when VC realizes a file is conflicted does not always come interactively. For example, some people automatically find a set of Org Mode files on startup, and may keep those .org files under version control. If any of the files are conflicted, the user just sees some messages fly by, and might later check the "*Messages*" buffer to find out what files were conflicted. I'm not saying this happened to me or anything; it's a purely hypothetical example.

* Backslash cleanup in Elisp source filesPaul Eggert2015-09-171-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | This patch should not change behavior. It typically omits backslashes where they are redundant (e.g., in the string literal "^\$"). In a few places, insert backslashes where they make regular expressions clearer: e.g., replace "^\*" (equivalent to "^*") with "^\\*", which has the same effect as a regular expression. Also, use ‘\ %’ instead of ‘\%’ when avoiding confusion with SCCS IDs, and similarly use ‘\ $’ instead of ‘\$’ when avoiding confusion with RCS IDs, as that makes it clearer that the backslash is intended.

* Fix bug whereby saving files hung in VC hook.Karl Fogel2014-12-031-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | Saving a buffer visiting a file under SVN control would hang if the remote repository were unreachable, because the VC hooks tried to run "svn status -u" on the file, where the "-u" tells svn to get update information from the remote repository. http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2014-12/msg00174.html * vc/vc-svn.el (vc-svn-state): Remove optional `localp' argument and always pass "-v" to "svn status", never "-u".
* In vc, abolish the dir-status method.Eric S. Raymond2014-12-021-9/+7

* Eliminate an unuted function argument.Eric S. Raymond2014-12-021-1/+1
| | | | | | | | * vc.el, all backends: API simplification: Remove 4th 'default-state' argument from vc-dir-status files and its backend methods - no backend method ever set it. It was used only in the fallback method to to set a default of 'up-to-date, though a convoluted call chain obscured this.
* Remove could-register from the set of public VC backend methods,Eric S. Raymond2014-12-011-4/+0
| | | | | | * vc/vc.el and all backends: API simplification; could-register is no longer a public method. (vc-cvs.el still has a private implementation.)
* Terminate vc-disable-async-diff with extreme prejudice.Eric S. Raymond2014-12-011-2/+1
| | | | | | * vc/vc.el, and all backends: API cleanup; the backend diff method takes an explicit async flag. This eliminates a particularly ugly global.
* * lisp/vc/vc-svn.el: Remove stray comment char introduced earlier today.Glenn Morris2014-12-011-1/+1

* Refactor VC merging to fix a layer violation.Eric S. Raymond2014-12-011-0/+23
| | | | | | | | * vc/vc.el, vc/vc-cvs.el, vc/vc-rcs.el, vc/vc-svn.el: The 'merge' backend method of RCS/CVS/SVN is now 'merge-file', to contrast with 'merge-branch'. Prompting for merge revisions is pushed down to the back ends; this fixes a layering violation that caused bad behavior with SVN.
* Confine vc-stay-local to CVS, because it was unusable in SVN.Eric S. Raymond2014-12-011-14/+1

* Remove stay-local support in svn back end, because...Eric S. Raymond2014-12-011-12/+3

* Remove vc-state-heuristic from the set of public methods.Eric S. Raymond2014-12-011-20/+1
| | | | | | | * vc/vc.el, vc-hooks.el, and all backends: API simplification; vc-state-heuristic is no longer a public method, having been removed where it is redundant, unnecessary, or known buggy. This eliminated all backends except CVS. Eliminates bug#7850.
* Argument removal inadvertently omitted from my previous commit.Eric S. Raymond2014-12-011-1/+1

* Remove editable argument from VC's backend checkout methods.Eric S. Raymond2014-11-201-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | Alters vc/vc-bzr.el, vc/vc-cvs.el, vc/vc-dav.el, vc/vc-git.el, vc/vc-hg.el, vc/vc-mtn.el, vc/vc-rcs.el, vc/vc-sccs.el, vc/vc-svn.el, vc/vc.el. where this matters (which is only in SCCS and RCS) files are now always checked out editable. This may actually have been dynamically true already - it looks like the vc-next-action code evolved past visiting the other case. Tested with RCS.
* Remove never-used rev argument from VC's backend checkin methods.Eric S. Raymond2014-11-201-2/+1
| | | | | | | | | | Alters vc/vc-arch.el, vc/vc-bzr.el, vc/vc-cvs.el, vc/vc-dav.el, vc/vc-git.el, vc/vc-hg.el, vc/vc-mtn.el, vc/vc-rcs.el, vc/vc-sccs.el, vc/vc-svn.el, vc/vc.el. Only the RCS, SCCS, and CVS back ends tried to do anything with it, and that code was never exercised. Chiseling away the cruft of decades...
