* Make dynflag argument for withTiming pure.Andreas Klebinger2019-10-231-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | 19 times out of 20 we already have dynflags in scope. We could just always use `return dflags`. But this is in fact not free. When looking at some STG code I noticed that we always allocate a closure for this expression in the heap. Clearly a waste in these cases. For the other cases we can either just modify the callsite to get dynflags or use the _D variants of withTiming I added which will use getDynFlags under the hood.
* Refactor iface file generation:Ömer Sinan Ağacan2019-09-301-17/+20
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This commit refactors interface file generation to allow information from the later passed (NCG, STG) to be stored in interface files. We achieve this by splitting interface file generation into two parts: * Partial interfaces, built based on the result of the core pipeline * A fully instantiated interface, which also contains the final fingerprints and can optionally contain information produced by the backend. This change is required by !1304 and !1530. -dynamic-too handling is refactored too: previously when generating code we'd branch on -dynamic-too *before* code generation, but now we do it after. (Original code written by @AndreasK in !1530) Performance ~~~~~~~~~~~ Before this patch interface files where created and immediately flushed to disk which made space leaks impossible. With this change we instead use NFData to force all iface related data structures to avoid space leaks. In the process of refactoring it was discovered that the code in the ToIface Module allocated a lot of thunks which were immediately forced when writing/forcing the interface file. So we made this module more strict to avoid creating many of those thunks. Bottom line is that allocations go down by about ~0.1% compared to master. Residency is not meaningfully different after this patch. Runtime was not benchmarked. * ErrUtils: split withTiming into withTiming and withTimingSilentAlp Mestanogullari2019-09-191-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 'withTiming' becomes a function that, when passed '-vN' (N >= 2) or '-ddump-timings', will print timing (and possibly allocations) related information. When additionally built with '-eventlog' and executed with '+RTS -l', 'withTiming' will also emit both 'traceMarker' and 'traceEvent' events to the eventlog. 'withTimingSilent' on the other hand will never print any timing information, under any circumstance, and will only emit 'traceEvent' events to the eventlog. As pointed out in !1672, 'traceMarker' is better suited for things that we might want to visualize in tools like eventlog2html, while 'traceEvent' is better suited for internal events that occur a lot more often and that we don't necessarily want to visualize. This addresses #17138 by using 'withTimingSilent' for all the codegen bits that are expressed as a bunch of small computations over streams of codegen ASTs.

* Fix treatment of hi-boot files and dfunsSimon Peyton Jones2018-12-211-30/+63
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Trac #16038 exposed the fact that TcRnDriver.checkHiBootIface was creating a binding, in the module being compiled, for $fxBlah = $fBlah but $fxBlah was a /GlobalId/. But all bindings should be for /LocalIds/ else dependency analysis goes down the tubes. * I added a CoreLint check that an occurrence of a GlobalId is not bound by an binding of a LocalId. (There is already a binding-site check that no binding binds a GlobalId.) * I refactored (and actually signficantly simplified) the tricky code for dfuns in checkHiBootIface to ensure that we get LocalIds for those boot-dfuns. Alas, I then got "duplicate instance" messages when compiling HsExpr. It turns out that this is a long-standing, but extremely delicate, bug: even before this patch, if you compile HsExpr with -ddump-tc-trace, you get "duplicate instance". Without -ddump-tc-trace, it's OK. What a mess! The reason for the duplicate-instance is now explained in Note [Loading your own hi-boot file] in LoadIface. I fixed it by a Gross Hack in LoadIface.loadInterface. This is at least no worse than before. But there should be a better way. I have opened #16081 for this.

* Add flag to show docs of valid hole fitsMatthías Páll Gissurarson2018-07-121-1/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | One issue with valid hole fits is that the function names can often be opaque for the uninitiated, such as `($)`. This diff adds a new flag, `-fshow-docs-of-hole-fits` that adds the documentation of the identifier in question to the message, using the same mechanism as the `:doc` command. As an example, with this flag enabled, the valid hole fits for `_ :: [Int] -> Int` will include: ``` Valid hole fits include head :: forall a. [a] -> a {-^ Extract the first element of a list, which must be non-empty.-} with head @Int (imported from ‘Prelude’ (and originally defined in ‘GHC.List’)) ``` And one of the refinement hole fits, `($) _`, will read: ``` Valid refinement hole fits include ... ($) (_ :: [Int] -> Int) where ($) :: forall a b. (a -> b) -> a -> b {-^ Application operator. This operator is redundant, since ordinary application @(f x)@ means the same as @(f '$' x)@. However, '$' has low, right-associative binding precedence, so it sometimes allows parentheses to be omitted; for example: > f $ g $ h x = f (g (h x)) It is also useful in higher-order situations, such as @'map' ('$' 0) xs@, or @'Data.List.zipWith' ('$') fs xs@. Note that @($)@ is levity-polymorphic in its result type, so that foo $ True where foo :: Bool -> Int# is well-typed-} with ($) @'GHC.Types.LiftedRep @[Int] @Int (imported from ‘Prelude’ (and originally defined in ‘GHC.Base’)) ``` Another example of where documentation can come in very handy, is when working with the `lens` library. When you compile ``` {-# OPTIONS_GHC -fno-show-provenance-of-hole-fits -fshow-docs-of-hole-fits #-} module LensDemo where import Control.Lens import Control.Monad.State newtype Test = Test { _value :: Int } deriving (Show) value :: Lens' Test Int value f (Test i) = Test <$> f i updTest :: Test -> Test updTest t = t &~ do _ value (1 :: Int) ``` You get: ``` Valid hole fits include (#=) :: forall s (m :: * -> *) a b. * Less Tc inside simplCore (Phase 1 for #14391)Artem Pelenitsyn2018-05-151-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Simplifier depends on typechecker in two points: `thNameToGhcName` (`lookupThName_maybe`, in particular) and `lookupGlobal`. We want to cut the ties in two steps. 1. (Presented in this commit), reimplement both functions in a way that doesn't use typechecker. 2. (Should follow), do code moving: a) `lookupGlobal` should go in some typechecker-free place; b) `thNameToGhcName` should leave simplifier, because it is not used there at all (probably, it should be placed somewhere where `GhcPlugins` can see it -- this is suggested by Joachim on Trac). Details ======= We redesigned lookup interface a bit so that it exposes some `IO`-equivalents of `Tc`-features in use. First, `CoreMonad.hs` still calls `lookupGlobal` which is no longer bound to the typechecker monad, but still resides in `TcEnv.hs` — it should be moved out of Tc-land at some point (“Phase 2”) in the future in order to achieve its part of the #14391's goal. Second, `lookupThName_maybe` is eliminated from `CoreMonad.hs` completely; this already achieves its part of the goal of #14391. Its client, though, `thNameToGhcName`, is better to be moved in the future also, for it is not used in the `CoreMonad.hs` (or anywhere else) anyway. Joachim suggested “any module reexported by GhcPlugins (or maybe even that module itself)”. As a side goal, we removed `initTcForLookup` which was instrumental for the past version of `lookupGlobal`. This, in turn, called for pushing some more parts of the lookup interface from the `Tc`-monad to `IO`, most notably, adding `IO`-version of `lookupOrig` and pushing `dataConInfoPtrToName` to `IO`. The `lookupOrig` part, in turn, triggered a slight redesign of name cache updating interface: we now have both, `updNameCacheIO` and `updNameCacheTc`, both accepting `mod` and `occ` to force them inside, instead of more error-prone outside before. But all these hardly have to do anything with #14391, mere refactoring. * Fix a Backpack recompilation avoidance bug when signatures change.Edward Z. Yang2017-02-171-28/+40
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Summary: Recompilation avoidance checks if -this-unit-id has changed by relying on the "wanted module" check in readIface ("Something is amiss..."). Unfortunately, this check didn't check if the instantiation made sense, which meant that if you changed the signatures of a Backpack package, we'd still treat the old signatures as up-to-date. The way I fixed this was by having findAndReadIface take in a 'Module' representing the /actual/ module we were intending to lookup. We convert this into the 'Module' we expect to see in 'mi_module' and now do a more elaborate check that will also verify that instantiations make sense. Along the way, I robustified the logging infrastructure for recompilation checking, and folded wrongIfaceModErr (which was dead code) into the error message. Signed-off-by: Edward Z. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Summary: Generally speaking, it's not possible to "hide" a requirement from a package you include, because if there is some module relying on that requirement, well, you can't just wish it out of existence. However, some packages don't have any modules. For these, we can validly thin out requirements; indeed, this is very convenient if someone has published a large signature package but you only want some of the definitions. This patchset tweaks the interpretation of export lists in signatures: in particular, they no longer need to refer to entities that are defined locally; they range over both the current signature as well as any signatures that were inherited from signature packages (defined by having zero exposed modules.) In the process of doing this, I cleaned up a number of other things: * rnModIface and rnModExports now report errors that occurred during renaming and can propagate these to the TcM monad. This is important because in the current semantics, you can thin out a type which is referenced by a value you keep; in this situation, we need to error (to ensure that all types in signatures are rooted, so that we can determine their identities). * I ended up introducing a new construct 'dependency signature; to bkp files, to make it easier to tell if we were depending on a signature package. Something is happening in the renamer to remove the parens around visible type application, causing T12530 to fail, as the dumped splice decl is after the renamer. This needs to be fixed by keeping the parens, but I do not know where they are being removed. I have amended the test to pass, by removing the parens in the expected output. * Clean up handling of known-key Names in interface filesBen Gamari2016-10-131-3/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Previously BinIface had some dedicated logic for handling tuple names in the symbol table. As it turns out, this logic was essentially dead code as it was superceded by the special handling of known-key things. Here we cull the tuple code-path and use the known-key codepath for all tuple-ish things. This had a surprising number of knock-on effects, * constraint tuple datacons had to be made known-key (previously they were not) * IfaceTopBndr was changed from being a synonym of OccName to a synonym of Name (since we now need to be able to deserialize Names directly from interface files) * the change to IfaceTopBndr complicated fingerprinting, since we need to ensure that we don't go looking for the fingerprint of the thing we are currently fingerprinting in the fingerprint environment (see notes in MkIface). Handling this required distinguishing between binding and non-binding Name occurrences in the Binary serializers. * the original name cache logic which previously lived in IfaceEnv has been moved to a new NameCache module * I ripped tuples and sums out of knownKeyNames since they introduce a very large number of entries. During interface file deserialization we use static functions (defined in the new KnownUniques module) to map from a Unique to a known-key Name (the Unique better correspond to a known-key name!) When we need to do an original name cache lookup we rely on the parser implemented in isBuiltInOcc_maybe. * HscMain.allKnownKeyNames was folded into PrelInfo.knownKeyNames. * Lots of comments were sprinkled about describing the new scheme. * Rework renaming of children in export lists.Matthew Pickering2016-10-081-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The target of this patch is exports such as: ``` module Foo ( T(A, B, C) ) where ``` Essentially this patch makes sure that we use the correct lookup functions in order to lookup the names in parent-children export lists. This change highlighted the complexity of this small part of GHC which accounts for the scale. This change was motivated by wanting to remove the `PatternSynonym` constructor from `Parent`. As with all these things, it quickly spiraled out of control into a much larger refactor. * Make InstalledUnitId be ONLY a FastString.Edward Z. Yang2016-10-081-3/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It turns out that we don't really need to be able to extract a ComponentId from UnitId, except in one case. So compress UnitId into a single FastString. The one case where we do need the ComponentId is when we are compiling an instantiated version of a package; we need the ComponentId to look up the indefinite version of this package from the database. So now we just pass it in as an argument -this-component-id. Also: ghc-pkg now no longer will unregister a package if you register one with the same package name, if the instantiations don't match. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Both gcc and clang tell which warning flag a reported warning can be controlled with, this patch makes ghc do the same. More generally, this allows for annotated compiler output, where an optional annotation is displayed in brackets after the severity. This also adds a new flag `-f(no-)show-warning-groups` to control whether to show which warning-group (such as `-Wall` or `-Wcompat`) a warning belongs to. This flag is on by default. * Replace calls to `ptext . sLit` with `text`Jan Stolarek2016-01-181-51/+51
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Summary: In the past the canonical way for constructing an SDoc string literal was the composition `ptext . sLit`. But for some time now we have function `text` that does the same. Plus it has some rules that optimize its runtime behaviour. This patch takes all uses of `ptext . sLit` in the compiler and replaces them with calls to `text`. The main benefits of this patch are clener (shorter) code and less dependencies between module, because many modules now do not need to import `FastString`. I don't expect any performance benefits - we mostly use SDocs to report errors and it seems there is little to be gained here. * Implement DuplicateRecordFieldsAdam Gundry2015-10-161-7/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This implements DuplicateRecordFields, the first part of the OverloadedRecordFields extension, as described at https://ghc.haskell.org/trac/ghc/wiki/Records/OverloadedRecordFields/DuplicateRecordFields This includes fairly wide-ranging changes in order to allow multiple records within the same module to use the same field names. Note that it does *not* allow record selector functions to be used if they are ambiguous, and it does not have any form of type-based disambiguation for selectors (but it does for updates). Subsequent parts will make overloading selectors possible using orthogonal extensions, as described on the wiki pages. This part touches quite a lot of the codebase, and requires changes to several GHC API datatypes in order to distinguish between field labels (which may be overloaded) and selector function names (which are always unique). The Haddock submodule has been adapted to compile with the GHC API changes, but it will need further work to properly support modules that use the DuplicateRecordFields extension. Test Plan: New tests added in testsuite/tests/overloadedrecflds; these will be extended once the other parts are implemented. * Unify hsig and hs-boot; add preliminary "hs-boot" merging.Edward Z. Yang2015-09-211-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch drops the file level distinction between hs-boot and hsig; we figure out which one we are compiling based on whether or not there is a corresponding hs file lying around. To make the "import A" syntax continue to work for bare hs-boot files, we also introduce hs-boot merging, which takes an A.hi-boot and converts it to an A.hi when there is no A.hs file in scope. This will be generalized in Backpack to merge multiple A.hi files together; which means we can jettison the "load multiple interface files" functionality. This works automatically for --make, but for one-shot compilation we need a new mode: ghc --merge-requirements A will generate an A.hi/A.o from a local A.hi-boot file; Backpack will extend this mechanism further. Has Haddock submodule update to deal with change in msHsFilePath behavior. - This commit drops support for the hsig extension. Can we support it? It's annoying because the finder code is written with the assumption that where there's an hs-boot file, there's always an hs file too. To support hsig, you'd have to probe two locations. Easier to just not support it. - #10333 affects us, modifying an hs-boot still doesn't trigger recomp. - See compiler/main/Finder.hs: this diff is very skeevy, but it seems to work. - This code cunningly doesn't drop hs-boot files from the "drop hs-boot files" module graph, if they don't have a corresponding hs file. I have no idea if this actually is useful. Signed-off-by: Edward Z.
