This patch disentangles a bit more DynFlags from the native code
generator (CmmToAsm).
In more details:
- add a new NCGConfig datatype in GHC.CmmToAsm.Config which contains the
configuration of a native code generation session
- explicitly pass NCGConfig/Platform arguments when necessary
- as a consequence `sdocWithPlatform` is gone and there are only a few
`sdocWithDynFlags` left
- remove the use of `unsafeGlobalDynFlags` from GHC.CmmToAsm.CFG
- remove `sdocDebugLevel` (now we pass the debug level via NCGConfig)
There are still some places where DynFlags is used, especially because
of pretty-printing (CLabel), because of Cmm helpers (such as
`cmmExprType`) and because of `Outputable` instance for the
instructions. These are left for future refactoring as this patch is
already big.

* Add 'dumpAction' hook to DynFlags.
It allows GHC API users to catch dumped intermediate codes and
information. The format of the dump (Core, Stg, raw text, etc.) is now
reported allowing easier automatic handling.
* Add 'traceAction' hook to DynFlags.
Some dumps go through the trace mechanism (for instance unfoldings that
have been considered for inlining). This is problematic because:
1) dumps aren't written into files even with -ddump-to-file on
2) dumps are written on stdout even with GHC API
3) in this specific case, dumping depends on unsafe globally stored
DynFlags which is bad for GHC API users
We introduce 'traceAction' hook which allows GHC API to catch those
traces and to avoid using globally stored DynFlags.
* Avoid dumping empty logs via dumpAction/traceAction (but still write
empty files to keep the existing behavior)

Before this patch, GHC always printed the * kind unparenthesized.
This led to two issues:
1. Sometimes GHC printed invalid or incorrect code.
For example, GHC would print: type F @* x = x
when it meant to print: type F @(*) x = x
In the former case, instead of a kind application we were getting a
type operator (@*).
2. Sometimes GHC printed kinds that were correct but hard to read.
Should Either * Int be read as Either (*) Int
or as (*) Either Int ?
This depends on whether -XStarIsType is enabled, but it would be
easier if we didn't have to check for the flag when reading the code.
We can solve both problems by assigning (*) a different precedence. Note
that Haskell98 kinds are not affected:
((* -> *) -> *) -> * does NOT become (((*) -> (*)) -> (*)) -> (*)
The parentheses are added when (*) is used in a function argument
position:
F * * * becomes F (*) (*) (*)
F A * B becomes F A (*) B
Proxy * becomes Proxy (*)
a * -> * becomes a (*) -> *

Previously, we had an elaborate mechanism for selecting the warnings to
generate in the presence of different `COMPLETE` matching groups that,
albeit finely-tuned, produced wrong results from an end user's
perspective in some cases (#13363).
The underlying issue is that at the point where the `ConVar` case has to
commit to a particular `COMPLETE` group, there's not enough information
to do so and the status quo was to just enumerate all possible complete
sets nondeterministically. The `getResult` function would then pick the
outcome according to metrics defined in accordance to the user's guide.
But crucially, it lacked knowledge about the order in which affected
clauses appear, leading to the surprising behavior in #13363.
In !1010 we taught the term oracle to reason about literal values a
variable can certainly not take on. This MR extends that idea to
`ConLike`s and thereby fixes #13363: Instead of committing to a
particular `COMPLETE` group in the `ConVar` case, we now split off the
matching constructor incrementally and record the newly covered case as
a refutable shape in the oracle. Whenever the set of refutable shapes
covers any `COMPLETE` set, the oracle recognises vacuosity of the
uncovered set.
This patch goes a step further: Since at this point the information
in value abstractions is merely a cut down representation of what the
oracle knows, value abstractions degenerate to a single `Id`, the
semantics of which is determined by the oracle state `Delta`.
Value vectors become lists of `[Id]` given meaning to by a single
`Delta`, value set abstractions (of which the uncovered set is an
instance) correspond to a union of `Delta`s which instantiate the
same `[Id]` (akin to models of formula).

ghc-pkg needs to be aware of platforms so it can figure out which
subdire within the user package db to use. This is admittedly
roundabout, but maybe Cabal could use the same notion of a platform as
GHC to good affect too.

This patch finally delivers on Trac #15952. Specifically
* Completely remove Note [The tcType invariant], along with
its complicated consequences (IT1-IT6).
* Replace Note [The well-kinded type invariant] with:
Note [The Purely Kinded Type Invariant (PKTI)]
* Instead, establish the (PKTI) in TcHsType.tcInferApps,
by using a new function mkAppTyM when building a type
application. See Note [mkAppTyM].
* As a result we can remove the delicate mkNakedXX functions
entirely. Specifically, mkNakedCastTy retained lots of
extremly delicate Refl coercions which just cluttered
everything up, and(worse) were very vulnerable to being
silently eliminated by (say) substTy. This led to a
succession of bug reports.
The result is noticeably simpler to explain, simpler
to code, and Richard and I are much more confident that
it is correct.
It does not actually fix any bugs, but it brings us closer.
E.g. I hoped it'd fix #15918 and #15799, but it doesn't quite
do so. However, it makes it much easier to fix.
I also did a raft of other minor refactorings:
* Use tcTypeKind consistently in the type checker
* Rename tcInstTyBinders to tcInvisibleTyBinders,
and refactor it a bit
* Refactor tcEqType, pickyEqType, tcEqTypeVis
Simpler, probably more efficient.
* Make zonkTcType zonk TcTyCons, at least if they have
any free unification variables -- see zonk_tc_tycon
in TcMType.zonkTcTypeMapper.
Not zonking these TcTyCons was actually a bug before.
* Simplify try_to_reduce_no_cache in TcFlatten (a lot)
* Combine checkExpectedKind and checkExpectedKindX.
And then combine the invisible-binder instantation code
Much simpler now.
* Fix a little bug in TcMType.skolemiseQuantifiedTyVar.
I'm not sure how I came across this originally.
* Fix a little bug in TyCoRep.isUnliftedRuntimeRep
(the ASSERT was over-zealous). Again I'm not certain
how I encountered this.
* Add a missing solveLocalEqualities in
TcHsType.tcHsPartialSigType.
I came across this when trying to get level numbers
right.

gives better performance.

Fix unused-import stuff in a better way
In that patch got the sense of the comparison back to front, and
thereby failed to implement the unused-import rules described in
Note [Choosing the best import declaration] in RdrName
This led to Trac #13064 and #15393
Fixing this bug revealed a bunch of unused imports in libraries;
the ones in the GHC repo are part of this commit.
The two important changes are
* Fix the bug in bestImport
* Modified the rules by adding (a) in
Note [Choosing the best import declaration] in RdrName
Reason: the previosu rules made Trac #5211 go bad again. And
the new rule (a) makes sense to me.
In unravalling this I also ended up doing a few other things
* Refactor RnNames.ImportDeclUsage to use a [GlobalRdrElt] for the
things that are used, rather than [AvailInfo]. This is simpler
and more direct.
* Rename greParentName to greParent_maybe, to follow GHC
naming conventions
* Delete dead code RdrName.greUsedRdrName

In a previous patch we replaced some built-in literal constructors
(MachInt, MachWord, etc.) with a single LitNumber constructor.
In this patch we replace the `Mach` prefix of the remaining constructors
with `Lit` for consistency (e.g., LitChar, LitLabel, etc.).
Sadly the name `LitString` was already taken for a kind of FastString
and it would become misleading to have both `LitStr` (literal
constructor renamed after `MachStr`) and `LitString` (FastString
variant). Hence this patch renames the FastString variant `PtrString`
(which is more accurate) and the literal string constructor now uses the
least surprising `LitString` name.
Both `Literal` and `LitString/PtrString` have recently seen breaking
changes so doing this kind of renaming now shouldn't harm much.

Summary:
Implement the "Embrace Type :: Type" GHC proposal,
.../ghc-proposals/blob/master/proposals/0020-no-type-in-type.rst
GHC 8.0 included a major change to GHC's type system: the Type :: Type
axiom. Though casual users were protected from this by hiding its
features behind the -XTypeInType extension, all programs written in GHC
8+ have the axiom behind the scenes. In order to preserve backward
compatibility, various legacy features were left unchanged. For example,
with -XDataKinds but not -XTypeInType, GADTs could not be used in types.
Now these restrictions are lifted and -XTypeInType becomes a redundant
flag that will be eventually deprecated.
* Incorporate the features currently in -XTypeInType into the
-XPolyKinds and -XDataKinds extensions.
* Introduce a new extension -XStarIsType to control how to parse * in
code and whether to print it in error messages.

Poor DPH and its vectoriser have long been languishing; sadly it seems there is
little chance that the effort will be rekindled. Every few years we discuss
what to do with this mass of code and at least once we have agreed that it
should be archived on a branch and removed from `master`. Here we do just that,
eliminating heaps of dead code in the process.
Here we drop the ParallelArrays extension, the vectoriser, and the `vector` and
`primitive` submodules.

The main job of this commit is to track more accurately the scope
of tyvars introduced by user-written foralls. For example, it would
be to have something like this:
forall a. Int -> (forall k (b :: k). Proxy '[a, b]) -> Bool
In that type, a's kind must be k, but k isn't in scope. We had a
terrible way of doing this before (not worth repeating or describing
here, but see the old tcImplicitTKBndrs and friends), but now
we have a principled approach: make an Implication when kind-checking
a forall. Doing so then hooks into the existing machinery for
preventing skolem-escape, performing floating, etc. This also means
that we bump the TcLevel whenever going into a forall.
The new behavior is done in TcHsType.scopeTyVars, but see also
TcHsType.tc{Im,Ex}plicitTKBndrs, which have undergone significant
rewriting. There are several Notes near there to guide you. Of
particular interest there is that Implication constraints can now
have skolems that are out of order; this situation is reported in
TcErrors.
A major consequence of this is a slightly tweaked process for type-
checking type declarations. The new Note [Use SigTvs in kind-checking
pass] in TcTyClsDecls lays it out.
The error message for dependent/should_fail/TypeSkolEscape has become
noticeably worse. However, this is because the code in TcErrors goes to
some length to preserve pre-8.0 error messages for kind errors. It's time
to rip off that plaster and get rid of much of the kind-error-specific
error messages. I tried this, and doing so led to a lovely error message
for TypeSkolEscape. So: I'm accepting the error message quality regression
for now, but will open up a new ticket to fix it, along with a larger
error-message improvement I've been pondering. This applies also to
dependent/should_fail/{BadTelescope2,T14066,T14066e}, polykinds/T11142.
Other minor changes:
- isUnliftedTypeKind didn't look for tuples and sums. It does now.
- check_type used check_arg_type on both sides of an AppTy. But the left
side of an AppTy isn't an arg, and this was causing a bad error message.
I've changed it to use check_type on the left-hand side.
- Some refactoring around when we print (TYPE blah) in error messages.
The changes decrease the times when we do so, to good effect.
Of course, this is still all controlled by
-fprint-explicit-runtime-reps

Provide flag for showing showing Word# and Word64# as hexadecimal when
dumping GHC core. The only affects Word, not Int, and it prefixes the
hexadecimal with enough zeroes to make the total character count a power
of two. For example:
- 0x0C0C instead of 0xC0C
- 0x00BA00BA instead of 0xBA00BA
This also affects the presentation of Word# and Word64# in GHC's error
messages. It is not expected that the flag will be used for this, but
it is a side-effect worth noting.

We were getting the stack trace printed twice in assertion
failures (e.g. see the Description of Trac #14552).
This fixes it, by deleting code.

-XNoImplicitPrelude and a `import GhcPrelude` is inserted in all

We pretty-print a type by converting it to an IfaceType and
pretty-printing that. But
(a) that's a bit indirect, and
(b) delibrately loses information about (e.g.) the kind
on the /occurrences/ of a type variable
So this patch implements debugPprType, which pretty prints
the type directly, with no fancy formatting. It's just used
for debugging.
I took the opportunity to refactor the debug-pretty-printing
machinery a little. In particular, define these functions
and use them:
ifPprDeubug :: SDoc -> SDOc -> SDoc
-- Says what to do with and without -dppr-debug
whenPprDebug :: SDoc -> SDoc
-- Says what to do with -dppr-debug; without is empty
getPprDebug :: (Bool -> SDoc) -> SDoc
getPprDebug used to be called sdocPprDebugWith
whenPprDebug used to be called ifPprDebug
So a lot of files get touched in a very mechanical way

GHC 8.2.1 is out, so now GHC's support window only extends back to GHC
8.0. This means we can delete gobs of code that was only used for GHC
7.10 support. Hooray!

Allow customization of diagnostic colors through the GHC_COLORS
environment variable. Some color-related code have been refactored to
PprColour to reduce the circular dependence between DynFlags,
Outputable, ErrUtils. Some color functions that were part of Outputable
but were never used have been deleted.

This replaces three methods in OutputableBndr with one,
and adds comments.
There's also a tiny change in the placement of equals signs in
debug-prints. I like it better that way, but if it complicates
life for anyone we can put it back.

This patch converts the 4 lasting static flags (read from the command
line and unsafely stored in immutable global variables) into dynamic
flags. Most use cases have been converted into reading them from a DynFlags.
In cases for which we don't have easy access to a DynFlags, we read from
'unsafeGlobalDynFlags' that is set at the beginning of each 'runGhc'.
It's not perfect (not thread-safe) but it is still better as we can
set/unset these 4 flags before each run when using GHC API.

This major patch implements Join Points, as described in
https://ghc.haskell.org/trac/ghc/wiki/SequentCore. You have
to read that page, and especially the paper it links to, to
understand what's going on; but it is very cool.
It's Luke Maurer's work, but done in close collaboration with Simon PJ.
This Phab is a squash-merge of wip/join-points branch of
http://github.com/lukemaurer/ghc. There are many, many interdependent
changes.

This commit implements the proposal in
https://github.com/ghc-proposals/ghc-proposals/pull/29 and
https://github.com/ghc-proposals/ghc-proposals/pull/35.
Here are some of the pieces of that proposal:
* Some of RuntimeRep's constructors have been shortened.
* TupleRep and SumRep are now parameterized over a list of RuntimeReps.
* This
means that two types with the same kind surely have the same
representation.
Previously, all unboxed tuples had the same kind, and thus the fact
above was
false.
* RepType.typePrimRep and friends now return a *list* of PrimReps. These
functions can now work successfully on unboxed tuples. This change is
necessary because we allow abstraction over unboxed tuple types and so
cannot
always handle unboxed tuples specially as we did before.
* We sometimes have to create an Id from a PrimRep. I thus split PtrRep
* into
LiftedRep and UnliftedRep, so that the created Ids have the right
strictness.
* The RepType.RepType type was removed, as it didn't seem to help with
* much.
* The RepType.repType function is also removed, in favor of typePrimRep.
* I have waffled a good deal on whether or not to keep VoidRep in
TyCon.PrimRep. In the end, I decided to keep it there. PrimRep is *not*
represented in RuntimeRep, and typePrimRep will never return a list
including
VoidRep. But it's handy to have in, e.g., ByteCodeGen and friends. I can
imagine another design choice where we have a PrimRepV type that is
PrimRep
with an extra constructor. That seemed to be a heavier design, though,
and I'm
not sure what the benefit would be.
* The last, unused vestiges of # (unliftedTypeKind) have been removed.
* There were several pretty-printing bugs that this change exposed;
* these are fixed.
* We previously checked for levity polymorphism in the types of binders.
* But we
also must exclude levity polymorphism in function arguments. This is
hard to check
for, requiring a good deal of care in the desugarer. See Note [Levity
polymorphism
checking] in DsMonad.
* In order to efficiently check for levity polymorphism in functions, it
* was necessary
to add a new bit of IdInfo. See Note [Levity info] in IdInfo.
* It is now safe for unlifted types to be unsaturated in Core. Core Lint

* We can only know strictness after zonking, so several checks around

Summary:
Add prettyprinter tests, which take a file, parse it, pretty print it,
re-parse the pretty printed version and then compare the original and
new ASTs (ignoring locations)
Updates haddock submodule to match the AST changes.
There are three issues outstanding
1. Extra parens around a context are not reproduced. This will require an
AST change and will be done in a separate patch.
2. Currently if an `HsTickPragma` is found, this is not pretty-printed,
to prevent noise in the output.
I am not sure what the desired behaviour in this case is, so have left
it as before. Test Ppr047 is marked as expected fail for this.
3. Apart from in a context, the ParsedSource AST keeps all the parens from
the original source. Something is happening in the renamer to remove the
parens around visible type application, causing T12530 to fail, as the
dumped splice decl is after the renamer.
This needs to be fixed by keeping the parens, but I do not know where they
are being removed. I have amended the test to pass, by removing the parens
in the expected output.

This is a preliminary commit to add colors to diagnostics (warning and
error messages). The aesthetic changes are:
- 'warning', 'error', and 'fatal' are all colored magenta, red, and
red respectively.
- The warning annotation [-Wsomething] shares the same color.
- Warnings and errors are also bolded (this is consistent with what
other compilers do).
A new flag has been added to control the behavior:
-fdiagnostics-color=(always|auto|never)
This flag is 'auto' by default. However, auto-detection is not
implemented yet, so it effectively it defaults to off.

This patch implements Backpack for GHC. It's a big patch but I've tried quite
hard to keep things, by-in-large, self-contained.
