The new representation is identical to a static constructor, which is much simpler for the GC to traverse, and we get to remove the complicated bitmap-traversal code from the GC. - Rewrite all the code to generate SRTs in CmmBuildInfoTables, and document it much better (see Note [SRTs]). This has been something I've wanted to do since we moved to the new code generator, I finally had the opportunity to finish it while on a transatlantic flight recently :) There are a series of 4 diffs: 1. D4632 (this one), which does the bulk of the changes 2. D4633 which adds support for smaller `CmmLabelDiffOff` constants 3. D4634 which takes advantage of D4632 and D4633 to save a word in info tables that have an SRT on x86_64. This is where most of the binary size improvement comes from. 4. D4637 which makes a further optimisation to merge some SRTs with static FUN closures. This adds some complexity and the benefits are fairly modest, so it's not clear yet whether we should do this. Results (after (3), on x86_64) - GHC itself (staticaly linked) is 5.2% smaller - -1.7% binary sizes in nofib, -2.9% module sizes. Full nofib results: P176 - I measured the overhead of traversing all the static objects in a major GC in GHC itself by doing `replicateM_ 1000 performGC` as the first thing in `Main.main`. The new version was 5-10% faster, but the results did vary quite a bit. - I'm not sure if there's a compile-time difference, the results are too unreliable. This commit fixes it by switching fdReady() to take int64_t, into which a Haskell `Int` will always fit. (Note we could not switch to `long long` because that is 32 bit on 64-bit Windows machines.) Further, to be able to actually wait longer than ~49 days, we put loops around the waiting syscalls (they all accept only 32-bit integers). Note the timer signal would typically interrupt the syscalls before the ~49 days are over, but you can run Haskell programs without the timer signal, an we want it to be correct in all cases. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The new primop compareByteArrays# :: ByteArray# -> Int# {- offset -} -> ByteArray# -> Int# {- offset -} -> Int# {- length -} -> Int# allows to compare the subrange of the first `ByteArray#` to the (same-length) subrange of the second `ByteArray#` and returns a value less than, equal to, or greater than zero if the range is found, respectively, to be byte-wise lexicographically less than, to match, or be greater than the second range. Under the hood, the new primop is implemented in terms of the standard ISO C `memcmp(3)` function. It is currently an out-of-line primop but work is underway to optimise this into an inline primop for a future follow-up Differential (see D4091). This primop has applications in packages like `text`, `text-short`, `bytestring`, `text-containers`, `primitive`, etc. which currently have to incur the overhead of an ordinary FFI call to directly or indirectly invoke `memcmp(3)` as well has having to deal with some `unsafePerformIO`-variant. While at it, this also improves the documentation for the existing `copyByteArray#` primitive which has a non-trivial type-signature that significantly benefits from a more explicit description of its arguments. This means that we have to recognize e.g. both `_ungetch` and `ungetch`. The former is the actual symbol name on windows and the latter is the POSIX variant. The problem is that on normal windows programs `ungetch` should not be in the global namespace. To work around this, we now mark the deprecated symbols as weak symbols in the global namespace. This provides the flexibility we need: * If you use the symbol without defining it, we assume you meant to use the POSIX variant. * If you actually define the symbol, we'll hence forth use that definition and assume you didn't mean to use POSIX code. This is how MingW64's wrapper also works. This requires D3028. Fixes #13210. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Summary: This commit makes various improvements and addresses some issues with Compact Regions (aka Compact Normal Forms). This was the most important thing I wanted to fix. Compaction previously prevented GC from running until it was complete, which would be a problem in a multicore setting. Now, we compact using a hand-written Cmm routine that can be interrupted at any point. When a GC is triggered during a sharing-enabled compaction, the GC has to traverse and update the hash table, so this hash table is now stored in the StgCompactNFData object. Previously, compaction consisted of a deepseq using the NFData class, followed by a traversal in C code to copy the data. This is now done in a single pass with hand-written Cmm (see rts/Compact.cmm). We no longer use the NFData instances, instead the Cmm routine evaluates components directly as it compacts. The new compaction is about 50% faster than the old one with no sharing, and a little faster on average with sharing (the cost of the hash table dominates when we're doing sharing). Static objects that don't (transitively) refer to any CAFs don't need to be copied into the compact region. In particular this means we often avoid copying Char values and small Int values, because these are static closures in the runtime. Each Compact# object can support a single compactAdd# operation at any given time, so the Data.Compact library now enforces mutual exclusion using an MVar stored in the Compact object. We now get exceptions rather than killing everything with a barf() when we encounter an object that cannot be compacted (a function, or a mutable object). We now also detect pinned objects, which can't be compacted either. The Data.Compact API has been refactored and cleaned up. A new compactSize operation returns the size (in bytes) of the compact object. Most of the documentation is in the Haddock docs for the compact library, which I've expanded and improved here. Various comments in the code have been improved, especially the main Note [Compact Normal Forms] in rts/sm/CNF.c. I've added a few tests, and expanded a few of the tests that were there. We now also run the tests with GHCi, and in a new test way that enables sanity checking (+RTS -DS). This struct is mostly just copied in `getRTSStats()`, so the implementation of that function is a lot shorter. * Types are more consistent. We use a uint64_t byte count for all memory values, and Time for all time values. * Names are more consistent. We use a suffix `_bytes` for all byte counts and `_ns` for all time values. * We now collect information about the amount of memory in large objects and compact objects in `GCDetails`. (the latter was the reason I started doing this patch but it seems to have ballooned a bit!) * I fixed a bug in the calculation of the elapsed MUT time, and added an ASSERT to stop the calculations going wrong in the future. For now I kept the Haskell API in `GHC.Stats` the same, by impedence-matching with the new API. We could either break that API and make it match the C API more closely, or we could add a new API and deprecate the old one. Opinions welcome. Also It seems clear that package writers won't update their packages to properly support Windows. This won't export the functions (as in, they won't be in the symbol table of compiled code for the RTS.) but we inject them into the symbol table of the dynamic linker at startup. The problem with this approach is that it requires all symbols to be found. Even those of functions never used/called. This makes the number of libraries required to link things like `mingwex` quite high. To work around this the `rts` was relying on a trick. It itself was compiled with `MingW64-w`'s `GCC`. So it was already linked against `mingwex`. As such, it re-exported the symbols from itself. While this worked it made it impossible to link against `mingwex` in user libraries. And with this means no `C99` code could ever run in `GHCi` on Windows without having the required symbols re-exported from the rts. Consequently this rules out a large number of packages on Windows. SDL2, HMatrix etc. After talking with @rwbarton I have taken the approach of loading entire object files when a symbol is needed instead of doing the dependency tracking on a per symbol basis. This is a lot less fragile and a lot less complicated to implement. The changes come down to the following steps: 1) modify the linker to and introduce a new state for ObjectCode: `Needed`. A Needed object is one that is required for the linking to succeed. The initial set consists of all Object files passed as arguments to the link. 2) Change `ObjectCode`'s to be indexed but not initialized or resolved. This means we know where we would load the symbols, but haven't actually done so. 3) Mark any `ObjectCode` belonging to `.o` passed as argument as required: ObjectState `NEEDED`. 4) During `Resolve` object calls, mark all `ObjectCode` containing the required symbols as `NEEDED` 5) During `lookupSymbol` lookups, (which is called from `linkExpr` and `linkDecl` in `GHCI.hs`) is the symbol is in a not-yet-loaded `ObjectCode` then load the `ObjectCode` on demand and return the address of the symbol. Otherwise produce an unresolved symbols error as expected. 6) On `unloadObj` we then change the state of the object and remove it's symbols from the `reqSymHash` table so it can be reloaded. This change affects all platforms and OSes which use the runtime linker. It seems there are no real perf tests for `GHCi`, but performance shouldn't be impacted much. We gain a lot of time not loading all `obj` files, and we lose some time in `lookupSymbol` when we're finding sections that have to be loaded. The actual finding itself is O(1) (Assuming the hashtnl is perfect) It also consumes slighly more memory as instead of storing just the address of a symbol I also store some other information, like if the symbol is weak or not. This change will break any packages relying on renamed POSIX functions that were re-named and re-exported by the rts. Any packages following the proper naming for functions as found on MSDN will work fine. Test Plan: ./validate on all platforms which use the Runtime linker.
