* Diagnostic codes: acccept test changessheaf2022-09-131-1/+1
| | | | | | | | The testsuite output now contains diagnostic codes, so many tests need to be updated at once. We decided it was best to keep the diagnostic codes in the testsuite output, so that contributors don't inadvertently make changes to the diagnostic codes.

* Check quoted TH names are in the correct namespacesheaf2022-01-041-4/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | When quoting (using a TH single or double quote) a built-in name such as the list constructor (:), we didn't always check that the resulting 'Name' was in the correct namespace. This patch adds a check in GHC.Rename.Splice to ensure we get a Name that is in the term-level/type-level namespace, when using a single/double tick, respectively. Fixes #20884.

* Fall back to types when looking up data constructors (#18740)wip/ghc-18740-lookup-updateDaniel Rogozin2020-10-111-2/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Before this patch, referring to a data constructor in a term-level context led to a scoping error: ghci> id Int <interactive>:1:4: error: Data constructor not in scope: Int After this patch, the renamer falls back to the type namespace and successfully finds the Int. It is then rejected in the type checker with a more useful error message: <interactive>:1:4: error: • Illegal term-level use of the type constructor ‘Int’ imported from ‘Prelude’ (and originally defined in ‘GHC.Types’) • In the first argument of ‘id’, namely ‘Int’ In the expression: id Int We also do this for type variables.

* Error message wibbles from out-of-scope changesSimon Peyton Jones2015-06-261-4/+4
| | | | | | The patch "Treat out-of-scope variables as holes" makes lots of error messages change a bit. This patch has all the change.

* Use U+2018 instead of U+201B quote mark in compiler messagesHerbert Valerio Riedel2014-02-251-1/+1
| | | | | | | This matches GCC's choice of Unicode quotation marks (i.e. U+2018 and U+2019) and therefore looks more familiar on the console. This addresses #2507. Signed-off-by: Herbert Valerio Riedel <hvr@gnu.org>
