Since commit 61a47c1ad3a4dc ("sysctl: Remove the sysctl system call"),
sys_sysctl is actually unavailable: any input can only return an error.
We have been warning about people using the sysctl system call for years
and believe there are no more users. Even if there are users of this
interface if they have not complained or fixed their code by now they
probably are not going to, so there is no point in warning them any
longer.
So completely remove sys_sysctl on all architectures.

Add a system call to allow filesystem information to be queried. A request
value can be given to indicate the desired attribute. Support is provided
for enumerating multi-value attributes.

NEW SYSTEM CALL
===============
The new system call looks like:

The params parameter optionally points to a block of parameters:

If params is NULL, the default is that params->request is
FSINFO_ATTR_STATFS and all the other fields are 0. params_size indicates
the size of the parameter struct. If the parameter block is short compared
to what the kernel expects, the missing length will be set to 0; if the
parameter block is longer, an error will be given if the excess is not all
zeros.
The object to be queried is specified as follows - part param->flags
indicates the type of reference:
(1) FSINFO_FLAGS_QUERY_PATH - dfd, pathname and at_flags indicate a
filesystem object to query.
There is no separate system call providing an analogue of lstat() -
AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW should be set in at_flags instead.
AT_NO_AUTOMOUNT can also be used to an allow automount point to be
queried without triggering it.
RESOLVE_* flags can also be set in resolve_flags to further restrict
the patchwalk.
(2) FSINFO_FLAGS_QUERY_FD - dfd indicates a file descriptor pointing to
the filesystem object to query. pathname should be NULL.
(3) FSINFO_FLAGS_QUERY_MOUNT - pathname indicates the numeric ID of the
mountpoint to query as a string. dfd is used to constrain which
mounts can be accessed. If dfd is AT_FDCWD, the mount must be within
the subtree rooted at chroot, otherwise the mount must be within the
subtree rooted at the directory specified by dfd.
(4) In the future FSINFO_FLAGS_QUERY_FSCONTEXT will be added - dfd will
indicate a context handle fd obtained from fsopen() or fspick(),
allowing that to be queried before the target superblock is attached
to the filesystem or even created.
params->request indicates the attribute/attributes to be queried. This can
be one of:
FSINFO_ATTR_STATFS - statfs-style info
FSINFO_ATTR_IDS - Filesystem IDs
FSINFO_ATTR_LIMITS - Filesystem limits
FSINFO_ATTR_SUPPORTS - Support for statx, ioctl, etc.
FSINFO_ATTR_TIMESTAMP_INFO - Inode timestamp info
FSINFO_ATTR_VOLUME_ID - Volume ID (string)
FSINFO_ATTR_VOLUME_UUID - Volume UUID
FSINFO_ATTR_VOLUME_NAME - Volume name (string)
FSINFO_ATTR_FSINFO_ATTRIBUTE_INFO - Information about attr Nth
FSINFO_ATTR_FSINFO_ATTRIBUTES - List of supported attrs
Some attributes (such as the servers backing a network filesystem) can have
multiple values. These can be enumerated by setting params->Nth and
params->Mth to 0, 1, ... until ENODATA is returned.
result_buffer and result_buf_size point to the reply buffer. The buffer is
filled up to the specified size, even if this means truncating the reply.
The size of the full reply is returned, irrespective of the amount data
that was copied. In future versions, this will allow extra fields to be
tacked on to the end of the reply, but anyone not expecting them will only
get the subset they're expecting. If either buffer of result_buf_size are
0, no copy will take place and the data size will be returned.

Add a superblock event notification facility whereby notifications about
superblock events, such as I/O errors (EIO), quota limits being hit
(EDQUOT) and running out of space (ENOSPC) can be reported to a monitoring
process asynchronously. Note that this does not cover vfsmount topology
changes. watch_mount() is used for that.
Firstly, a watch queue needs to be created:

In this case, it would let me monitor my own homedir for events. After
setting the watch, records will be placed into the queue when, for example,
as superblock switches between read-write and read-only. Records are of

n->watch.info & WATCH_INFO_ID will be the fifth argument to
watch_sb(), shifted.

NOTIFY_SUPERBLOCK_READONLY, being set if the superblock becomes
R/O, and being cleared otherwise.
n->sb_id will be the ID of the superblock, as can be retrieved with
the fsinfo() syscall, as part of the fsinfo_sb_notifications
attribute in the the watch_id field.
Note that it is permissible for event records to be of variable length -
or, at least, the length may be dependent on the subtype. Note also that
the queue can be shared between multiple notifications of various types.

Add a mount notification facility whereby notifications about changes in
mount topology and configuration can be received. Note that this only
covers vfsmount topology changes and not superblock events. A separate
facility will be added for that.
Every mount is given a change counter than counts the number of topological
rearrangements in which it is involved and the number of attribute changes
it undergoes. This allows notification loss to be dealt with. Later
patches will provide a way to quickly retrieve this value, along with
information about topology and parameters for the superblock.
Firstly, a watch queue needs to be created:

root, so a watch will catch all of the events happening in the subtree
rooted at the watch.

object that initially triggered it.
n->watch.info & NOTIFY_MOUNT_IS_NOW_RO will be used for
NOTIFY_MOUNT_READONLY, being set if the superblock becomes R/O, and
being cleared otherwise, and for NOTIFY_MOUNT_NEW_MOUNT, being set
if the new mount is a submount (e.g. an automount).
n->watch.info & NOTIFY_MOUNT_IS_SUBMOUNT if true indicates that the
NOTIFY_MOUNT_NEW_MOUNT notification is in response to a mount
performed by the kernel (e.g. an automount).
n->triggered_on indicates the ID of the mount to which the change
was accounted (e.g. the new parent of a new mount).
n->axiliary_mount indicates the ID of an additional mount that was
affected (e.g. a new mount itself) or 0.
n->topology_changes provides the value of the topology change
counter of the triggered-on mount at the conclusion of the
operarion.
n->attr_changes provides the value of the attribute change counter
of the triggered-on mount at the conclusion of the operarion.
n->aux_topology_changes provides the value of the topology change
counter of the auxiliary mount at the conclusion of the operation.
Note that it is permissible for event records to be of variable length -

With an old elftoaout, the generation of tftpboot.img fail with "lseek:
invalid argument".
This is due to offset being negative.

Make use of the struct_size() helper instead of an open-coded version
in order to avoid any potential type mistakes. Also, remove unnecessary
variable _len_.
This code was detected with the help of Coccinelle and, audited and
fixed manually.

Since commit 84af7a6194e4 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over
'---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually
decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances.
This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines,
I also fixed the indentation.
There are a variety of indentation styles found.

c) 8 spaces + '---help---'
d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---'
e) 1 tab + '---help---' (correct indentation)

This change converts the existing mmap_sem rwsem calls to use the new mmap
locking API instead.

All architectures define pte_index() as
(address >> PAGE_SHIFT) & (PTRS_PER_PTE - 1)
and all architectures define pte_offset_kernel() as an entry in the array
of PTEs indexed by the pte_index().
For the most architectures the pte_offset_kernel() implementation relies
on the availability of pmd_page_vaddr() that converts a PMD entry value to
the virtual address of the page containing PTEs array.
Let's move x86 definitions of the PTE accessors to the generic place in
<linux/pgtable.h> and then simply drop the respective definitions from the
other architectures.
The architectures that didn't provide pmd_page_vaddr() are updated to have
that defined.
The generic implementation of pte_offset_kernel() can be overridden by an
architecture and alpha makes use of this because it has special ordering
requirements for its version of pte_offset_kernel().

Patch series "mm: consolidate definitions of page table accessors", v2.
The low level page table accessors (pXY_index(), pXY_offset()) are
duplicated across all architectures and sometimes more than once. For
instance, we have 31 definition of pgd_offset() for 25 supported
architectures.
Most of these definitions are actually identical and typically it boils
down to, e.g.

These definitions can be shared among 90% of the arches provided
XYZ_SHIFT, PTRS_PER_XYZ and xyz_page_vaddr() are defined.
For architectures that really need a custom version there is always
possibility to override the generic version with the usual ifdefs magic.
These patches introduce include/linux/pgtable.h that replaces
include/asm-generic/pgtable.h and add the definitions of the page table
accessors to the new header.
This patch (of 12):
The linux/mm.h header includes <asm/pgtable.h> to allow inlining of the
functions involving page table manipulations, e.g. pte_alloc() and
pmd_alloc(). So, there is no point to explicitly include <asm/pgtable.h>
in the files that include <linux/mm.h>.
The include statements in such cases are remove with a simple loop:

Currently, the log-level of show_stack() depends on a platform
realization. It creates situations where the headers are printed with
lower log level or higher than the stacktrace (depending on a platform or
user).
Furthermore, it forces the logic decision from user to an architecture
side. In result, some users as sysrq/kdb/etc are doing tricks with
temporary rising console_loglevel while printing their messages. And in
result it not only may print unwanted messages from other CPUs, but also
omit printing at all in the unlucky case where the printk() was deferred.
Introducing log-level parameter and KERN_UNSUPPRESSED [1] seems an easier
approach than introducing more printk buffers. Also, it will consolidate
printings with headers.
Introduce show_stack_loglvl(), that eventually will substitute
show_stack().

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]
sizeof(flexible-array-member) triggers a warning because flexible array
members have incomplete type[1]. There are some instances of code in
which the sizeof operator is being incorrectly/erroneously applied to
zero-length arrays and the result is zero. Such instances may be hiding
some bugs. So, this work (flexible-array member conversions) will also
help to get completely rid of those sorts of issues.
This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.

It needs access_process_vm() if the traced process does not share
mm with the caller. Solution is similar to what sparc64 does.
Note that genregs32_set() is only ever called with pos being 0
or 32 * sizeof(u32) (the latter - as part of PTRACE_SETREGS
handling).

We do need access_process_vm() to access the target's reg_window.
However, access to caller's memory (storing the result in
genregs32_get(), fetching the new values in case of genregs32_set())
should be done by normal uaccess primitives.

The SRMMU page-table allocator allocates multiple PTE tables per page,
since they are only 1K in size. However, this means that calls to
pgtable_pte_page_{ctor,dtor}() must be serialised and performed only by
the first and last page-table allocation for the page respectively.
Use the page reference count to track how many PTE tables we have
allocated for a given page returned by the SRMMU allocator and only
call the ctor()/dtor() functions for the first and last user respectively.

The pages backing page-table allocations for SRMMU are allocated via
memblock as part of the "nocache" region initialisation during
srmmu_paging_init() and should not be freed even if a later call to
pgtable_pte_page_ctor() fails.
Remove the broken call to __free_page().

sparc32 never registered the memory occupied by the kernel image with
memblock_add() and it only reserved this memory with meblock_reserve().
With openbios as system firmware, the memory occupied by the kernel is
reserved in openbios and removed from mem.available. The prom setup code in
the kernel uses mem.available to set up the memory banks and essentially
there is a hole for the memory occupied by the kernel image.
Later in bootmem_init() this memory is memblock_reserve()d.
Up until recently, memmap initialization would call __init_single_page()
for the pages in that hole, the free_low_memory_core_early() would mark
them as reserved and everything would be Ok.
After the change in memmap initialization introduced by the commit "mm:
memmap_init: iterate over memblock regions rather that check each PFN", the
hole is skipped and the page structs for it are not initialized. And when
they are passed from memblock to page allocator as reserved, the latter
gets confused.
Simply registering the memory occupied by the kernel with memblock_add()
resolves this issue.
Tested on qemu-system-sparc with Debian Etch [1] userspace.

Change the 'pgtable_t' type for sparc32 so that it represents the uncached
virtual address of the PTE table, rather than the underlying 'struct page'.
This allows us to free page table allocations smaller than a page.

The "SRMMU" supports 4k pages using a fixed three-level walk with a
256-entry PGD and 64-entry PMD/PTE levels. In order to fill a page
with a 'pgtable_t', the SRMMU code allocates four native PTE tables
into a single PTE allocation and similarly for the PMD level, leading
to an array of 16 physical pointers in a 'pmd_t'
This breaks the generic code which assumes READ_ONCE(*pmd) will be
word sized.
In a manner similar to ef22d8abd876 ("m68k: mm: Restructure Motorola
MMU page-table layout"), this patch implements the native page-table
setup directly. This significantly increases the page-table memory
overhead, but will be addresses in a subsequent patch.

To support kmap_atomic_prot(), all architectures need to support
protections passed to their kmap_atomic_high() function. Pass protections
into kmap_atomic_high() and change the name to kmap_atomic_high_prot() to
match.
Then define kmap_atomic_prot() as a core function which calls
kmap_atomic_high_prot() when needed.
Finally, redefine kmap_atomic() as a wrapper of kmap_atomic_prot() with
the default kmap_prot exported by the architectures.

We want to support kmap_atomic_prot() on all architectures and it makes
sense to define kmap_atomic() to use the default kmap_prot.
So we ensure all arch's have a globally available kmap_prot either as a
define or exported symbol.
