| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It used to be handy that we only had a couple of headers, but over time intel_drv.h has become unwieldy. Extract declarations to a separate header file corresponding to the implementation module, clarifying the modularity of the driver. Ensure the new header is self-contained, and do so with minimal further includes, using forward declarations as needed. Include the new header only where needed, and sort the modified include directives while at it and as needed. No functional changes. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | preferred mode Some monitors apparently forget to mark any mode as preferred in the EDID. In this particular case we have a very generic looking ID "PNP Model 0 Serial Number 4" / "LVDS 800x600" so a specific quirk doesn't seem particularly wise. Also the quirk we have (EDID_QUIRK_FIRST_DETAILED_PREFERRED) is actually defunct so we'd have to fix it first. When there is no preferred mode we currently fall back to the VBT. That approach fails us here as the VBT mode is 1024x768 whereas the panel resolution is 800x600. So instead of falling back to the VBT when there is no preferred mode let's just pick the first probed mode. Only if the EDID provided no modes we fall back to the VBT. For this machine the VBIOS would appear to select the 800x600 60Hz EST mode rather than the first detailed mode (which is the new fallback will pick). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | On lynxpoint the bios sometimes sets up the backlight using the CPU display, but the driver expects using the PWM PCH override register. Read the value from the CPU register, then convert it to the other units by converting from the old duty cycle, to freq, to the new units. This value is then programmed in the override register, after which we set the override and disable the CPU display control. This allows us to switch the source without flickering, and make the backlight controls work in the driver. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The majority of runtime-pm operations are bounded and scoped within a function; these are easy to verify that the wakeref are handled correctly. We can employ the compiler to help us, and reduce the number of wakerefs tracked when debugging, by passing around cookies provided by the various rpm_get functions to their rpm_put counterpart. This makes the pairing explicit, and given the required wakeref cookie the compiler can verify that we pass an initialised value to the rpm_put (quite handy for double checking error paths). For regular builds, the compiler should be able to eliminate the unused local variables and the program growth should be minimal. The main benefit is consistent debug logging when we turn off the backlight. Currently we see nothing in dmesg which made me wonder whether the backlight was even getting turned off properly. The second benefit is consistency; This is what we do for all the other backlight implementations. Per the report, no matter what display mode you select with xrandr, the i915 driver will always select the alternate fixed mode. For the reporter this means that the display will always run at 40Hz which is quite annoying. This may be due to the mode comparison. But there are some other potential issues. The choice of alt_fixed_mode seems dubious. It's the first non-preferred mode, but there are no guarantees that the only difference would be refresh rate. Similarly, there may be more than one preferred mode in the probed modes list, and the commit changes the preferred mode selection to choose the last one on the list instead of the first. (Note that the probed modes list is the raw, unfiltered, unsorted list of modes from drm_add_edid_modes(), not the pretty result after a drm_helper_probe_single_connector_modes() call.) Finally, we already have eerily similar code in place to find the downclock mode for DRRS that seems like could be reused here. Back to the drawing board. Note: This is a hand-crafted revert due to conflicts. If it fails to backport, please just try reverting the original commit directly. It is mainly for Halo and DT ones. >From our specs it doesn't seem that KBP brings any change on the display south engine. So let's consider this as a continuation of SunrisePoint, i.e., SPT+. Since it is easy to get confused by a letter change: KBL = Kabylake - CPU/GPU codename. KBP = Kabypoint - PCH codename.
