Works behind the scenes by spawning a co-routine/fiber to run the blocking operation and suspend it while waiting for I/O. This co-routine/fiber use is invisible to applications. For i368/x86_64 on GCC, uses very fast assembler co-routine support. On Windows uses native Win32 Fibers. Falls back to POSIX ucontext on other platforms. Assembler routines for more platforms are relatively easy to add by extending mysys/my_context.c, eg. similar to the Lua lcoco library. For testing, mysqltest and mysql_client_test are extended with the option --non-blocking-api. This causes the programs to use the non-blocking API for database access. mysql-test-run.pl has a similar option --non-blocking-api that uses this, as well as additional testcases. As a consequence, my_hash_init used inside federatedx initialization does not provide correct caller info parameters (file, line) , so they are initialized with whatever is on stack. When info about allocated memory is output in COM_DEBUG command, the server crashes trying to output string starting at 0xcccccccccccccccc. The fix is to remove SAFEMALLOC preprocessor flags from every CMakeLists.txt, except the top-level one. Also, SAFEMALLOC is not defined by default now, instead there is WITH_DEBUG_FULL CMake option which adds -DSAFEMALLOC to C and C++ flags in debug compilation. This option is off by default, because 1) Debug C runtime already has heap debugging builtin with overwrite and leak detection 2)safemalloc considerably slows down the tests. Note also that - SAFEMALLOC is gone in MySQL5.5 - On Windows, heap related overflows can also be found using free pageheap utility (that is also part of application verifier). This is even more efficient if there are no other layers on top of Windows heap allocator, e.g it is most efficient with release version.

Every exe or dll linked with mysys needs ws2_32, because mysys uses winsock function WSAStartup in my_init(). However, there is no need to explicitely add ws2_32 to the list of TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES multiple times. Visual Studio comes with a handy pragma that tells linker to add library. So patch replaces bunch of ws2_32 in CMakeLists with single pragma comment(lib,"ws2_32") in my_init.c Additionally, reference to non-existing "debug" library has been removed from TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES. The correct name of the library is "dbug".

The change removes the necessity to recomplile the same source files twice - with USE_TLS for DLLs and without USE_TLS for EXEs. Real benefit of this change is better readability and maintainability of TLS functions within MySQL. There is a performance loss using TlsXXX functions compared to __declspec but the difference is negligible in practice. In a sysbench-like benchmark I ran with with TlsGetValue, pthread_[get|set]_specific was called 600000000 times and took 0.17sec of total 35min CPU time, or 0.008%.

Another problem is that the embedded version of libmysql was not behaving (crash) the same as the non-embedded with respect to sending commands to a explicitly closed connection. The solution is to generate a mysqltest's stack trace on crash and to enable "reconnect" if the connection handle was explicitly closed so the behavior matches the non-embedded one. client/CMakeLists.txt: Link mysys to mysqltest. client/Makefile.am: Link mysys to mysqltest. client/mysqltest.c: Add fatal signal handling with backtracing for Unix and Windows. configure.in: Add check for weak symbols support and remove a spurious word. include/Makefile.am: Add new header with prototype for stack tracing functions. include/my_stacktrace.h: Add new header with prototype for stack tracing functions. libmysqld/CMakeLists.txt: stack tracing is now part of mysys. libmysqld/Makefile.am: stack tracing is now part of mysys. libmysqld/lib_sql.cc: Re-connect if connection was explicitly closed.
