Remove 'use UNIVERSAL;', switch to UNIVERSAL::isa()

I spoke too soon. There are three uses in the standard distribution.
The attached patch should get rid of them.
Probably worth doing this irrespective of how the UNIVERSAL/import
question is resolved.
