GNU C's 'protoize' plus a few hand edits.
Will compile miniperl with gcc -x c++ (i.e. treat .c a C++ files)
Does not link seems gcc's C++ does not define a symbol for
const char foo[] = "....";
i.e. with empty [].

Subject: [PATCH]: reduced malloc patch
Since this problems arise again and again on the list, here is the
reduced malloc patch. It corrects the following problems:
a) several off-by-one in av_make();
b) Growing TMP on conversion number=>string;
c) Uncompatibility of -DDEBUGGING_MSTATS and system malloc;
(The first two problems are fixed by malloc_jumbo_2 as well, but the
2 chunks for "c" - in perl.c - were forgotten in that patch).
Enjoy,

Apologies if you see this twice, but I'm afraid my first attempt
fell into a black hole. Neither Achim's archive nor the NNTP
gateway seem to have recieved it.
If one tries to compile perl with all of
-DPACK_MALLOC -DHIDEMYMALLOC -DUSE_PERL_SBRK -DPERL_SBRK_VIA_MALLOC
then it's almost certain that miniperl will overflow the C stack on
its first attempt to call malloc().
This happens because with -DPACK_MALLOC Perl_malloc() expects sbrk()
to return 2K-aligned blocks and Perl_sbrk() provides the same sort
of alignments as the system malloc(), i.e. 8 bytes or so.
When Perl_malloc() notices the block returned by sbrk() isn't properly
aligned, it tries to croak("panic: Off-page sbrk"). Croak() calls
mess(); mess() calls mess_alloc(); mess_alloc() calls Perl_malloc();
Perl_malloc() again calls croak() and so on until the C stack overflows.
I see two problems here;
1. With -DPACK_MALLOC, Perl_sbrk() should return 2K-aligned blocks.
2. croak() should not recurse infinitely.
The patch below deals with #1. I'll think some more about #2.

I got the new installhtml from CPAN
(TOMC/scripts/pod2html-v2.0beta.shar.gz)
I had problems getting the system call to splitpod at line 376 to work.
1. splitroot was not being found
2. splitroot was not finding its library
3. I changed htmlroot to podroot at line 175 to match the documentation.

I sent this before, but it slipped through the cracks:
currently TWO_POT_OPTIMIZE and DEBUGGING together
lead to "assertion botched" panics for allocations between 64K and
68K (this is not motorola-related ;-).
Enjoy,

Here are some diffs to the _11 pods. I forgot to add perldelta to
perl.pod though.
And *PLEASE* fix the Artistic License so it no longer has the bogus
"whomever" misdeclined in the nominative case:
under the copyright of this Package, but belong to whomever generated
them, and may be sold commercially, and may be aggregated with this
It should obviously be "whoever".

From: John Hughes <john@AtlanTech.COM>

Subject: perl5.003_11, Should base use of gettimeofday on HAS_GETTIMEOFDAY, not I_SYS_TIME
I've been installing perl5.003_11 on a SCO system that has the TCP/IP runtime
installed but not the TCP/IP development system.
Unfortunately the <sys/time.h> include file is included in the TCP/IP runtime
while libsocket.a is in the development system.
This means that pp.c decides to use "gettimeofday" because <sys/time.h> is
present but I can't link the perl that gets compiled.
So, here's a patch to base the use of "gettimeofday" on "HAS_GETTIMEOFDAY"
instead of "I_SYS_TIME". I also took the liberty of removing the special
case for plan9 (I assume plan9 has <sys/time.h> but no gettimeofday. Am I
right?).

UnixWare 2.1 has no fp->_base so most of the debugging stuff in sv_gets just
core dumps.
Also, for some unknown reason fp->_cnt is sometimes < -1, screwing up the
initial SvGROW in svgets.
Appart from that its io is std.

Since _09 is going to be alpha anyway, I reiterate my question:
Is there any reason to not include my hash/array performance
patches in _09?
Btw, here is the next performance patch. It makes PADTMP values
stealable too. I do not do by setting TEMP flags on them, since it
would be a very distributed patch, and it would break some places
which check for TEMP for some other reasons (yes, I checked ;-).
This patch decreases *twice* the memory usage of
perl -e '$a = "a" x 1e6; 1'
Enjoy,

Here're diffs to bring a base 5.003_08 up to the current VMS working
sources. Nearly all of the changes are VMS-specific, and comprise
miscellaneous bugfixes accumulated since 5.003_07, rather than any
particular problem with 5.003_08. I'm posting them here since some
of the patches change core files, and I'd like to insure that I
haven't accidentally created problems for anyone else.
With these and a couple of of the small patches already send to p5p,
5.003_08 builds clean and passes all tests under VMS.
Thanks, Chip, for all the work.

From: Chip Salzenberg <chip@atlantic.net>
Files: op.c opcode.pl pod/perlop.pod pod/perltoc.pod pp.c pp.h pp_hot.c proto.h sv.c t/op/bop.t

Subject: Defined scoping for C<my> in control structures
From: Chip Salzenberg <chip@atlantic.net>
Files: op.c perly.c perly.c.diff perly.h perly.y proto.h toke.c
Finally defines semantics of "my" in control expressions,
like the condition of "if" and "while". In all cases, scope
of a "my" var extends to the end of the entire control

automatically declares the control variable "my" and limits
its scope to the loop.

[editor's note: no patch file was found for this release, so no
fine-grained changes]
I can't find the password for our ftp server, so I had to drop it into
ftp://ftp.sems.com/pub/incoming/perl5.002b3.tar.gz, which is a drop
directory you can't ls.
The current plan is that Andy is gonna whack on this a little more, and
then release a gamma in a few days when he's happy with it. So don't get
carried away. This is now *late* beta.
In other words, have less than the appropriate amount of fun. :-)

This is my patch patch.0m for perl5.000.
This patch fixes all remaining problems that I am aware of, and for
which I have a solution. It also updates some hint files and
documentation.
Here's what's new:
Configure
Protect against spaces in uname -m output (unicos).
Look in <stdlib.h> for malloctype and freetype.
Check if user has void free() or int free().
Look in linux/signal.h for signal names.
MANIFEST
MANIFEST.new
Two new hint files: cxux.sh and PowerUNIX.sh.
Sorted.
README
Indicate what gets installed and where it usually goes.
Thanks to Hallvard B. Furuseth <h.b.furuseth@usit.uio.no>
for suggesting this.
U/Myinit.U
Update extliblist comment.
U/dist3_051.pat
This file contains patches to dist 3 (PL 51) that I used to generate
Configure for perl.
U/mallocsrc.U
Look in <stdlib.h> for malloctype and freetype.
Check if user has void free() or int free().
config_h.SH
config.H
Add Free_t to handle void free() vs. int free().
ext/DynaLoader/README
Updated comment.
ext/POSIX/POSIX.pm
creat() has 2 arguments, not 3 (thanks, Paul).
ext/POSIX/POSIX.xs
Fix return type of lseek.
ext/SDBM_File/sdbm/sdbm.h
Add I_STDLIB guard on #include <stdlib.h>
ext/util/extliblist
Add note indicating this is obsolete. Don't remove it because
people might be using it for their own private extensions.
hints/PowerUNIX.sh
hints/cxux.sh
New files. Written by Tom.Horsley@mail.hcsc.com
hints/linux.sh
Simplified.
lib/ExtUtils/MakeMaker.pm
Typo fixed, only affected aix?
malloc.c
Allow for possible int free().
perl.h
pp_sys.c
util.c
If the user is not using vfork, move the #define vfork fork
util after various #include files. Since vfork() and fork() might
have different prototypes, the #define could cause a conflict in
system header files. (Reported for 386bsd.)
Makefile.SH
make realclean will remove h2xs and makeaperl (but leave behind
the .SH versions, of course).
