Ugh! ...
Macros were unsuitable for declaring the functions, extra () round
parameters removed - non-function forms of PerlXxx_yyyy() need to
add () themselves.
Need to include perlmem.h in util.c (at least) if not using Perl's malloc.

- support spawn via system(&P_NOWAIT,...) like OS2
- support wait() and waitpid()
- s/GetCurrentDirectory/GetCwd/, long-named XS to be removed
- support -lfoo properly in ExtUtils::Liblist
- fix outdated info about Win32 support in perlfaq2
- fix win32 bug in perldoc that causes spurious warnings
- regularize global function/variable names yet more
- fix bug in do_aspawn() (it was always invoking shell, instead of
almost never)
- implement and export win32_wait()
- stub version of USE_RTL_THREAD_API

TIEHASH works, but 2nd call (after db is closed, attempt
to reopen) tries to AUTOLOAD TIEHASH rather than using

GNU C's 'protoize' plus a few hand edits.
Will compile miniperl with gcc -x c++ (i.e. treat .c a C++ files)
Does not link seems gcc's C++ does not define a symbol for
const char foo[] = "....";
i.e. with empty [].

thr->errsv for threaded perl). Fix pp_tie and pp_dbmopen to use
GvCV(gv) instead of gv so AUTOLOAD stuff works. All tests now pass
again for non-threaded perl. Enhanced perl_get_sv to return
per-thread magicals where necessary for threaded perl.

DIY pp_entersub (in preparation for AUTOLOAD change). dbmopen
not tested. ofslen now maps to thr->Tofslen in thread.h. Added
missing #ifdef USE_THREADS around some DEBU_L statements in die().
Building without USE_THREADS fails quite a lot of tests. It looks
as though the move to per-thread magicals must be missing some
#ifdef USE_THREADS.

perl will compile but plenty of the magicals are still broken.

That doesn't look quite right to me. When provided a literal, you
should point at the actual literal (which normally has a global
lifetime), rather than making a mortal copy of it and pointing at
that. The mortal copy will be destroyed at the next statement
boundary, and you'll be left with a dangling pointer when you
unpack().
You're doing the very thing the XXX comment above was intended to
highlight.
I do agree that literals should be pack('p')-able. So, I'd suggest
the change be modified [...]

[editor's note: The changes between this and 5.004 were processed from
the m1t2 release, which was a bad idea as it was the _01 release which
had the final corrected attributions. The differences between the
various m*t* releases do that; I considered it most valuable just to
look at the _NN releases. Many patches have been separated out and/or
applied from the p5p archives nonetheless.]

perl 5.004 built without error or warning on VMS AXP/DECC with DECCRTL
(UCX) sockets (no sockshr library). However it fails the
lib/io_udp.t test for the following reasons:
1. The 'fromlen' parameter in pp_sysread *must* be sizeof(struct
sockaddr) or the DECCRTL fails with an invalid buffer size error.
2. The DECCRTL/UCX getpeerhost() function returns defined and a blank
'sockaddr' for udp hosts. A similar fix to that in vms/sockadapt.h
(for sockshr) is required for DECCRTL in pp_sys.c
The following diff (unix, sorry VMS folks) patches pp_sys.c so that
the udp test is successful using UCX.
