I don't fully understand why so many tables changed in
lib/unicode because of "make" -- maybe it was just overdue.

enabled via -DPERL_IMPLICIT_CONTEXT (all changes are noops
without that enabled):
- USE_THREADS now enables PERL_IMPLICIT_CONTEXT, so dTHR
is a noop; tests pass on Solaris; should be faster now!
- MULTIPLICITY has been tested with and without
PERL_IMPLICIT_CONTEXT on Solaris
- improved function database now merged with embed.pl
- everything except the varargs functions have foo(a,b,c) macros
to provide compatibility
- varargs functions default to compatibility variants that
get the context pointer using dTHX
- there should be almost no source compatibility issues as a
result of all this
- dl_foo.xs changes other than dl_dlopen.xs untested
- still needs documentation, fixups for win32 etc
Next step: migrate most non-mutex variables from perlvars.h
to intrpvar.h

should soon be automated also; the global variables that
escaped the PL_foo conversion are now reined in; renamed

type of same name; duplicated lists of pp_things in various

- needed to run `perl embed.pl`
- use PERL_CORE instead of PERLDLL in places that do mean PERL_CORE
- fix prototypes for a few declarations (Borland is finally quiet)
- move declaration of Mymalloc etc to perl.h (since win32 and other
ports may #define malloc themselves, to let extensions bind to
the version that perl used)
- move struct reg_data into a public header file, since it is
referenced in a public datatype
- win32 makefile fixes
- fix remaining s/thread/perl_thread/

*sigh* Well, without a bug report, what I could I do?...

Here's a patch. I suppose this should go into _01.

Following on from the patch to make uc, lc etc default to $_ (as per
Camel II), here is a followup patch to perlfunc that documents the
change. I think I have documented all the other cases where $_
defaulting works as well.

Subject: UnixWare 2.1 fix for perl5.003_08 - cope with fp->_cnt < -1, allow debugging

UnixWare 2.1 has no fp->_base so most of the debugging stuff in sv_gets just
core dumps.
Also, for some unknown reason fp->_cnt is sometimes < -1, screwing up the
initial SvGROW in svgets.
Appart from that its io is std.

Since _09 is going to be alpha anyway, I reiterate my question:
Is there any reason to not include my hash/array performance
patches in _09?
Btw, here is the next performance patch. It makes PADTMP values
stealable too. I do not do by setting TEMP flags on them, since it
would be a very distributed patch, and it would break some places
which check for TEMP for some other reasons (yes, I checked ;-).
This patch decreases *twice* the memory usage of
perl -e '$a = "a" x 1e6; 1'
Enjoy,

PORTABILITY
Subject: VMS patches post-5.003_08
Date: Fri, 22 Nov 1996 18:16:31 -0500 (EST)
From: Charles Bailey <bailey@hmivax.humgen.upenn.edu>
Files: lib/ExtUtils/MM_Unix.pm lib/ExtUtils/MM_VMS.pm lib/ExtUtils/MakeMaker.pm lib/File/Path.pm mg.c pp_ctl.c utils/h2xs.PL vms/config.vms vms/descrip.mms vms/gen_shrfls.pl vms/genconfig.pl vms/perlvms.pod vms/vms.c vms/vmsish.h
Here're diffs to bring a base 5.003_08 up to the current VMS working
sources. Nearly all of the changes are VMS-specific, and comprise
miscellaneous bugfixes accumulated since 5.003_07, rather than any
particular problem with 5.003_08. I'm posting them here since some
of the patches change core files, and I'd like to insure that I
haven't accidentally created problems for anyone else.
With these and a couple of of the small patches already send to p5p,
5.003_08 builds clean and passes all tests under VMS.
Thanks, Chip, for all the work.

To apply, change to your perl directory, run the command above, then
apply with
patch -p1 -N < thispatch.
Highlights of this patch include:
1. Fixes for $sitelib, $d_stdio_ptr_lval, and $d_stdio_cnt_lval
when config.sh is re-used.
2. Move embed.h, keywords.h, and opcode.h dependencies to
a special regen_headers target that is ordinarily not used.
This is now analogous to the run_byacc target. As a cosmetic
side-effect, I transliterated embed_h.sh into embed.pl so that
it can run on non-unix systems as well.
3. Tests for gdbm_{sync,exists,setopt} in GDBM_File (needed for
Slackware 2.1).
For good measure, I've also thrown in the following patches I pulled
off the list, mostly unmodified from the originals.
1. Larry's "unofficial official" fix for the subroutine array context
problem.
2. Tim's __DATA__ patch. (I kept forgetting about this one.)
3. Malcom's USE_OP_MASK patch to pave the way for his Safe extension.
4. Spider's suggested renaming of regexec to pregexec and regcomp to
pregcomp to avoid conflicts with POSIX symbols on Digital Unix.
(I only added a brief explanatory comment to the relevant .c
files.)
5. Spider's installperl patch to avoid installing *.orig and and the
.exists files. (I changed this a little to include patch's ~
suffix, which is used on systems with short file names (in some
versions of patch)).
6. Raphael's "safe_unlink" patch to installperl, in case a copy
of perl is currently runniung.
7. xsubpp 1.9.
8. Tim's lib.pm module (with patched corrected spelling of 2nd :-).
9. Tim's Exporter module version patches.
10. Tim's MakeMaker patches for make test when LINKTYPE=static.
11. Randal's pod2html patches.
12. Spider's "picky compiler" patches for x2p/util.[ch]
13. Paul's updated source filtering patches.
Patch and enjoy. I hope nothing breaks :-).

[editor's note: this commit combines approximate 4 months of furious
releases of Andy Dougherty and Larry Wall - see pod/perlhist.pod for
details. Andy notes that;
Alas neither my "Irwin AccuTrack" nor my DC 600A quarter-inch cartridge
backup tapes from that era seem to be readable anymore. I guess 13 years
exceeds the shelf life for that backup technology :-(.

A few of the new features: (18 Oct)
* Perl can now handle binary data correctly and has functions to pack and unpack binary structures into arrays or lists. You can now do arbitrary ioctl functions.
* You can now pass things to subroutines by reference.
* Debugger enhancements.
* An array or associative array may now appear in a local() list.
* Array values may now be interpolated into strings.
* Subroutine names are now distinguished by prefixing with &. You can call subroutines without using do, and without passing any argument list at all.
* You can use the new -u switch to cause perl to dump core so that you can run undump and produce a binary executable image. Alternately you can use the "dump" operator after initializing any variables and such.
* You can now chop lists.
* Perl now uses /bin/csh to do filename globbing, if available. This means that filenames with spaces or other strangenesses work right.
* New functions: mkdir and rmdir, getppid, getpgrp and setpgrp, getpriority and setpriority, chroot, ioctl and fcntl, flock, readlink, lstat, rindex, pack and unpack, read, warn, dbmopen and dbmclose, dump, reverse, defined, undef.
