I got the new installhtml from CPAN
(TOMC/scripts/pod2html-v2.0beta.shar.gz)
I had problems getting the system call to splitpod at line 376 to work.
1. splitroot was not being found
2. splitroot was not finding its library
3. I changed htmlroot to podroot at line 175 to match the documentation.

Finally I traced why MakeMaker runs wrongly under debugger: debugger
function calling sequence was assuming that
GvCV(CvGV(cv)) == cv
for non-anonymous subs (ne END). MakeMaker managed to break it by
*A::B = \&C::D;
eval 'sub C::D {new one}';
After this CvGV(\&A::B) is *C::D, but &{*C::D} is the "new one".
Patch follows (note that in this case we do not sacrifice having a
subroutine name in debugger output ;-).

Here is the patch which corrects bad things which happens when you
import subroutines and otherwise manipulate the symbol tree.
I put forward the only chunk which may be controversal, since it may
have a minor performance penalty. It is independent of the others, so
it can be freely deleted.
The manipulations which correctly propagate to method calls:
a) Pruning globs: delete $B::{method}
b) Undefing subroutines: undef &B::method;
c) Importing: *B::method = \&mymethod;

I've been installing perl5.003_11 on a SCO system that has the TCP/IP runtime
installed but not the TCP/IP development system.
Unfortunately the <sys/time.h> include file is included in the TCP/IP runtime
while libsocket.a is in the development system.
This means that pp.c decides to use "gettimeofday" because <sys/time.h> is
present but I can't link the perl that gets compiled.
So, here's a patch to base the use of "gettimeofday" on "HAS_GETTIMEOFDAY"
instead of "I_SYS_TIME". I also took the liberty of removing the special
case for plan9 (I assume plan9 has <sys/time.h> but no gettimeofday. Am I
right?).

These "should" be ready for inclusion in 5.004, although I'd like to
update Class::Template's doc for legibility. Dean, may we please have
your permission to include this in the distribution?
(I did look a bit into using Class::MethodMaker, but it seemed
a bit complicated.)
I know: these all look remarkably similar on the inside. I keep trying
to find a way to abstract out some of it. Hopefully, they're reasonably
legible at least in code, if not in docs. :-)
Chip/Tim, please check the stat function for proper use of Symbol.

This module's default exports override the core getpwent(), getpwuid(),
and getpwnam() functions, replacing them with versions that return
"User::pwent" objects. This object has methods that return the similarly
named structure field name from the C's passwd structure from F<pwd.h>;
namely name, passwd, uid, gid, quota, comment, gecos, dir, and shell.

as regular variables using the :FIELDS import tag. (Note that this still

added Options AutoTrace inhibit_exit
Though this may look a lot, all the changes are not in the main flow
of execution (in frills which are usually disabled), so I think they
may be added even this late in the cycle. Documentation would be quite
messy without these changes.
As well as I know, the documentation is complete now, so one can
_really_ write a new debugger from scratch.

Btw, here is the next performance patch. It makes PADTMP values
stealable too. I do not do by setting TEMP flags on them, since it
would be a very distributed patch, and it would break some places
which check for TEMP for some other reasons (yes, I checked ;-).
This patch decreases *twice* the memory usage of

Here're diffs to bring a base 5.003_08 up to the current VMS working
sources. Nearly all of the changes are VMS-specific, and comprise
miscellaneous bugfixes accumulated since 5.003_07, rather than any
particular problem with 5.003_08. I'm posting them here since some
of the patches change core files, and I'd like to insure that I
haven't accidentally created problems for anyone else.
With these and a couple of of the small patches already send to p5p,
5.003_08 builds clean and passes all tests under VMS.

This broke between 5.001n and 5.002. There was a long winded thread
about sorting undefs in some order (rather than coredumping) around
the 5.002beta times (search for "bogorefs" in the subject-line on
p5p archive for details). Larry added in some code that presumes that
the private flags are set by the time qsort() is called:
Unfortunately, sv_2pv() does not set the POKp flag, so the above
code breaks! Here's a patch against 5.00306.

Fix more spots where we had PerlIO_stderr() and should have had
Perl_debug_log instead.
I wasn't the one who originated this patch. But it looks like it
would improve the safety of AV creation.
Remove potentially incorrect casts on PerlIO_set_ptrcnt.
'ptr' is already STDCHAR, which is supposed to be the type of
char used in stdio.h, so we shouldn't have to cast it.

This patch removes a few obvious redundancies in the source.
This patch changes neither behavior nor performance. However, it does
reduce code size and improve maintainability by combining some common
code in gv_fullname() and gv_efullname().
When checking for memory leaks, I compiled Perl with "-DPURIFY".
Although that flag improves the leak checking, it also breaks
destruction of global objects, because SVs aren't kept in captive
arenas any more.
This patch rectifies the problem by providing an alternative
method for keeping track of SVs when Perl is compiled for Purify.
It has no effect on normal operation.
Add comment about assert(len >=0) when len is unsigned anyway.

Obviously, if you consult the bugs database, you'll note there are
still plenty of buglets that need fixing, and several enhancements that
I've intended to put in still haven't made it in (Hi, Tim and Ilya).
But I think it'll be pretty stable. And you can start to fiddle around
with prototypes (which are, of course, still totally undocumented).
Packrats, don't worry too much about readvertising this widely.
Nowadays we're on a T1 here, so our bandwidth is okay.

of an elegant way to bypass it for systems that need the cppstdin
wrapper.

This is my patch patch.1d for perl5.001. A complete description is
given below, but here are the basic changes.
1. Linux: more tweaks so dynamic loading works under ELF
or (maybe) under dld. There are so many different dld versions
and so many different tool sets, it's hard to be more specific.
2. perl -e '$v=1e19+0' no longer dumps core on Intel x86
processors.
3. pod stuff:
a. Wrapped pod2* translators in a 'SH' wrapper so that they
have the proper path to perl at the top.
b. Fixed pod/ Makefile to call the pod2html translator
correctly. (Why do pod2man and pod2html work differently?)
c. Include latest (Feb 2, 1995) version of pod2html, fresh from
ftp.metronet.com.
4. MakeMaker 4.093.
5. GIMME and installperl patches from Tim Bunce.

If HAS_MKDIR is not defined, the stat() call to check the result
of the system "mkdir" call was failing because the filename
pointer no longer pointed to the right location.

Okay, I understand how this one happened. This is a case where a
beneficial fix uncovered a bug elsewhere. I changed the constant
folder to prefer integer results over double if the numbers are the
same. In this case, they aren't, but it leaves the integer value there
anyway because the storage is already allocated for it, and it *might*
be used in an integer context. And since it's producing a constant, it
sets READONLY. Unfortunately, sv_2pv() bogusly preferred the integer
value to the double when READONLY was set. This never showed up if you
just said
print 1.4142135623731;
because in that case, there was already a string value.

In order to fix the duplicate DESTROY bug, I need to remove [the
modified] lines from sv_setsv.
Basically, copying an object shouldn't produce another object without an
explicit blessing. I'm not sure if this will break anything. If Ilya
and anyone else so inclined would apply this patch and see if it breaks
anything related to overloading (or anything else object-oriented), I'd
be much obliged.
By the way, here's a test script for the duplicate DESTROY. You'll note
that it prints DESTROYED twice, once for , and once for . I don't
think an object should be considered an object unless viewed through
a reference. When accessed directly it should behave as a builtin type.
