Creating an :func:`.and_` or :func:`.or_` construct with no arguments or
empty ``*args`` will now emit a deprecation warning, as the SQL produced is
a no-op (i.e. it renders as a blank string). This behavior is considered to
be non-intuitive, so for empty or possibly empty :func:`.and_` or
:func:`.or_` constructs, an appropriate default boolean should be included,
such as ``and_(True, *args)`` or ``or_(False, *args)``. As has been the
case for many major versions of SQLAlchemy, these particular boolean
values will not render if the ``*args`` portion is non-empty.
As there are some internal cases where an empty and_() construct is used
in order to build an optional WHERE expression, a private
utility function is added to suit this use case.

The :func:`.true` and :func:`.false` operators may now be applied as the
"onclause" of a :func:`.sql.join` on a backend that does not support
"native boolean" expressions, e.g. Oracle or SQL Server, and the expression
will render as "1=1" for true and "1=0" false. This is the behavior that
was introduced many years ago in :ticket:`2804` for and/or expressions.

The "expanding IN" feature, which generates IN expressions at query
execution time which are based on the particular parameters associated with
the statement execution, is now used for all IN expressions made against
lists of literal values. This allows IN expressions to be fully cacheable
independently of the list of values being passed, and also includes support
for empty lists. For any scenario where the IN expression contains
non-literal SQL expressions, the old behavior of pre-rendering for each
position in the IN is maintained. The change also completes support for
expanding IN with tuples, where previously type-specific bind processors
weren't taking effect.
As part of this change, a more explicit separation between
"literal execute" and "post compile" bound parameters is being made;
as the "ansi bind rules" feature is rendering bound parameters
inline, as we now support "postcompile" generically, these should
be used here, however we have to render literal values at
execution time even for "expanding" parameters. new test fixtures
etc. are added to assert everything goes to the right place.

Added new accessors to expressions of type :class:`.JSON` to allow for
specific datatype access and comparison, covering strings, integers,
numeric, boolean elements. This revises the documented approach of
CASTing to string when comparing values, instead adding specific
functionality into the PostgreSQL, SQlite, MySQL dialects to reliably
deliver these basic types in all cases.
The change also delivers a new feature to the test exclusions
system so that combinations and exclusions can be used together.

Created new visitor system called "internal traversal" that
applies a data driven approach to the concept of a class that
defines its own traversal steps, in contrast to the existing
style of traversal now known as "external traversal" where
the visitor class defines the traversal, i.e. the SQLCompiler.
The internal traversal system now implements get_children(),
_copy_internals(), compare() and _cache_key() for most Core elements.
Core elements with special needs like Select still implement
some of these methods directly however most of these methods
are no longer explicitly implemented.
The data-driven system is also applied to ORM elements that
take part in SQL expressions so that these objects, like mappers,
aliasedclass, query options, etc. can all participate in the
cache key process.
Still not considered is that this approach to defining traversibility
will be used to create some kind of generic introspection system
that works across Core / ORM. It's also not clear if
real statement caching using the _cache_key() method is feasible,
if it is shown that running _cache_key() is nearly as expensive as
compiling in any case. Because it is data driven, it is more
straightforward to optimize using inlined code, as is the case now,
as well as potentially using C code to speed it up.
In addition, the caching sytem now accommodates for anonymous
name labels, which is essential so that constructs which have
anonymous labels can be cacheable, that is, their position
within a statement in relation to other anonymous names causes
them to generate an integer counter relative to that construct
which will be the same every time. Gathering of bound parameters
from any cache key generation is also now required as there is
no use case for a cache key that does not extract bound parameter
values.

Add factilities to implement pytest.mark.parametrize and
pytest.fixtures patterns, which largely resemble things we are
already doing.
Ensure a facade is used, so that the test suite remains independent
of py.test, but also tailors the functions to the more limited
scope in which we are using them.
Additionally, create a class-based version that works from the
same facade.
Several old polymorphic tests as well as two of the sql test
are refactored to use the new features.

As part of the SQLAlchemy 2.0 migration project, a conceptual change has
been made to the role of the :class:`.SelectBase` class hierarchy,
which is the root of all "SELECT" statement constructs, in that they no
longer serve directly as FROM clauses, that is, they no longer subclass
:class:`.FromClause`. For end users, the change mostly means that any
placement of a :func:`.select` construct in the FROM clause of another
:func:`.select` requires first that it be wrapped in a subquery first,
which historically is through the use of the :meth:`.SelectBase.alias`
method, and is now also available through the use of
:meth:`.SelectBase.subquery`. This was usually a requirement in any
case since several databases don't accept unnamed SELECT subqueries
in their FROM clause in any case.

A major refactoring of all the functions handle all detection of
Core argument types as well as perform coercions into a new class hierarchy
based on "roles", each of which identify a syntactical location within a
SQL statement. In contrast to the ClauseElement hierarchy that identifies
"what" each object is syntactically, the SQLRole hierarchy identifies
the "where does it go" of each object syntactically. From this we define
a consistent type checking and coercion system that establishes well
defined behviors.
This is a breakout of the patch that is reorganizing select()
constructs to no longer be in the FromClause hierarchy.
Also includes a rename of as_scalar() into scalar_subquery(); deprecates
automatic coercion to scalar_subquery().

Reworked the :meth:`.ClauseElement.compare` methods in terms of a new
visitor-based approach, and additionally added test coverage ensuring that
all :class:`.ClauseElement` subclasses can be accurately compared
against each other in terms of structure. Structural comparison
capability is used to a small degree within the ORM currently, however
it also may form the basis for new caching features.

I7eda77fed3d8e73df84b3651fd6cfcfe858d4dc9, this set of changes
resolves all remaining flake8 conditions for those codes
we have enabled in setup.cfg.
Included are resolutions for all remaining flake8 issues
including shadowed builtins, long lines, import order, unused
imports, duplicate imports, and docstring issues.

This is a straight reformat run using black as is, with no edits
applied at all.
The black run will format code consistently, however in
some cases that are prevalent in SQLAlchemy code it produces
too-long lines. The too-long lines will be resolved in the
following commit that will resolve all remaining flake8 issues
including shadowed builtins, long lines, import order, unused
imports, duplicate imports, and docstring issues.

Fixed issue that is closely related to :ticket:`3639` where an expression
rendered in a boolean context on a non-native boolean backend would
be compared to 1/0 even though it is already an implcitly boolean
expression, when :meth:`.ColumnElement.self_group` were used. While this
does not affect the user-friendly backends (MySQL, SQLite) it was not
handled by Oracle (and possibly SQL Server). Whether or not the
expression is implicitly boolean on any database is now determined
up front as an additional check to not generate the integer comparison
within the compliation of the statement.

Started importing "collections" from "collections.abc" under Python 3.3 and
greater for Python 3.8 compatibility. Pull request courtesy Nathaniel
Knight.
In Python 3.3, the abstract base classes (Iterable, Mapping, etc.)
were moved from the `collections` module and put in the
`collections.abc` module. They remain in the `collections` module for
backwards compatibility, and will until Python 3.8.
This commit adds a variable (`collections_abc`) to the `util/compat`
module, which will be the `collections` module for Python < 3.3 and
before, or the `collections.abc` module for Python >= 3.3. It also
uses the new variable, getting rid of some deprecation warnings that
were seen when running under Python 3.7.

Reworked the new "autoescape" feature introduced in
:ref:`change_2694` in 1.2.0b2 to be fully automatic; the escape
character now defaults to a forwards slash ``"/"`` and
is applied to percent, underscore, as well as the escape
character itself, for fully automatic escaping. The
character can also be changed using the "escape" parameter.

Fixed bug where the recently added :meth:`.ColumnOperators.any_`
and :meth:`.ColumnOperators.all_` methods didn't work when called
as methods, as opposed to using the standalone functions
:func:`~.expression.any_` and :func:`~.expression.all_`. Also
added documentation examples for these relatively unintuitive
SQL operators.

Refined the behavior of :meth:`.Operators.op` such that in all cases,
if the :paramref:`.Operators.op.is_comparison` flag is set to True,
the return type of the resulting expression will be
:class:`.Boolean`, and if the flag is False, the return type of the
resulting expression will be the same type as that of the left-hand
expression, which is the typical default behavior of other operators.
Also added a new parameter :paramref:`.Operators.op.return_type` as well
as a helper method :meth:`.Operators.bool_op`.

The operator precedence for all comparison operators such as LIKE, IS,
IN, MATCH, equals, greater than, less than, etc. has all been merged
into one level, so that expressions which make use of these against
each other will produce parentheses between them. This suits the
stated operator precedence of databases like Oracle, MySQL and others
which place all of these operators as equal precedence, as well as
Postgresql as of 9.5 which has also flattened its operator precendence.

Added a new kind of :func:`.bindparam` called "expanding". This is
for use in ``IN`` expressions where the list of elements is rendered
into individual bound parameters at statement execution time, rather
than at statement compilation time. This allows both a single bound
parameter name to be linked to an IN expression of multiple elements,
as well as allows query caching to be used with IN expressions. The
new feature allows the related features of "select in" loading and
"polymorphic in" loading to make use of the baked query extension
to reduce call overhead. This feature should be considered to be
**experimental** for 1.2.

This patch moves the "doubling" of percent signs into
the base compiler and makes it completely a product
of whether or not the paramstyle is format/pyformat or

The expression used for COLLATE as rendered by the column-level

The longstanding behavior of the :meth:`.Operators.in_` and
:meth:`.Operators.not_in_` operators emitting a warning when
the right-hand condition is an empty sequence has been revised;
a new flag :paramref:`.create_engine.empty_in_strategy` allows an
empty "IN" expression to generate a simple boolean expression, or
to invoke the previous behavior of dis-equating the expression to
itself, with or without a warning. The default behavior is now
to emit the simple boolean expression, allowing an empty IN to
be evaulated without any performance penalty.

Added compiler-level flags used by Postgresql to place additional
parenthesis than would normally be generated by precedence rules
around operations involving JSON, HSTORE indexing operators as well as
within their operands since it has been observed that Postgresql's
precedence rules for at least the HSTORE indexing operator is not

the first SQL expression would be applied as the "comparison type"
to a compared tuple value; this has the effect in some cases of an
inappropriate "type coersion" occurring, such as when a tuple that
has a mix of String and Binary values improperly coerces target
values to Binary even though that's not what they are on the left
side. :func:`.tuple_` now expects heterogeneous types within its
list of values.
