Fix the low-level "invalid index" warnings in the singletons
These warnings aren't very helpful on their own due to the missing context,
but they are really disturbing when string-id based, higher-level API are
calling into functions.
* the index based APIs get meaningful error output
* the string-id based APIs get no error output at all
