#3 - tox passes everywhere (including validate)

- long vs int and unicode vs string needed some special case handling to doctest the same on 2 vs 3 (in each case the first replaces the second in 3)
- removing a pre-2.4 workaround due to only support 2.6+
- added back in some checks that cared about longs instead of ints in order to maintain the same api on 2
- printing dictionaries in deeply-nested structures with pprint instead of print, because order of keys is guaranteed across all supported versions
