getc returns an int, not a char. We're checking whether a char ==
EOF, which isn't kosher, and on systems where -funsigned-char is true,
dangerous. Change the type of the var to an int.
Tested by running on linux (ubuntu) and on linux ppc (debian), the
latter of which complained at compile time.
